George Brough (1890-1970), motorcycle racer and manufacturer of Brough Superior. Archive of correspondence, photographs and ephemera from Douglas Wesson (1914-1979), Brough's company secretary and friend. Collection includes a Motor Cycling Club tankard, 'London-Exeter 1931, G. Brough, Sidecar'; four vintage Brough Superior enamel badges, including S5, S99 & S100; three unused Brough Superior stickers, two of which are SS100; an autograph postcard, typed & signed, 24 February 1938, regarding Wesson starting at Vernon Road Works; an autograph letter, signed, on company letterhead, c.1939, congratulating Wesson on his engagement/wedding; an autograph letter, signed, on Salzburger Hof letterhead, 20 December 1958, wishing Wesson a happy Christmas (complete with envelope); an autograph letter, signed, on Pendine letterhead, 29 July 1969, congratulating Wesson on his Silver Wedding Anniversary, 'Will you accept from me my sincere thanks for the many years of kindly help and sincere loyalty you have always given to the companies carrying the name Brough, and to me personally for the support you have given me during the many illnesses I have enjoyed during the last few years. I want you to enjoy spending the attached cheque with as much pleasure as it gives me to send it to you.'; three Brough Superior Harvest Supper menus, 1954-55-56, each bearing numerous signatures (including George Brough & Constance Brough), the 1956 menu complete with invitation card; a letter from Bramley, Lipman & Co., Solicitors, 3 February 1970, addressed to Wesson and relating to Brough's will and trust fund; two signed letters from Constance Brough, on Pendine letterhead, 1970, 'Dear Mr Wesson, Will you please accept this little gift as a token of my great regard for you. I always think of you as the Rock of Gibraltar on approaching it from the sea. Something so solid and good that nothing would move. I thank you for all your kindness & thought both to my husband and myself during all these years, and do truly hope that our good friendship will continue.'; signed letter from Constance Brough to Mrs Wesson, 26 January 1979, offering her condolences following Douglas's death; a quantity of photographs, ranging in date, some depicting the Brough home and gardens (two inscribed and signed by Constance), some depicting the Wesson family at leisure; two vintage trilby hats, believed to have been given by Brough to Wesson as he didn't take to them himself (Brough notably wore a personalised flat cap when riding); several less important/later/unsigned letters, a business card and newspaper clippings. A group of miniature cabinet items to include Meissen style tea cup with blue cross swords, miniature Coalport tankard, a Trentham Hall (Staffordshire) miniature mug, another small, floral cup, a powder shaker bearing Worlock Collection label (probably Spode) a Spode miniature blue and white transfer printed filigree design chamber pot, another blue and white inkwell and cover and a Spode miniature blue and white transfer printed miniature sauce boat bearing Audrey White Collection label. (8)(B.P. 21% + VAT) Coalport design tankard is cracked. Meissen style cup lacks saucers. Other floral unmarked cup is cracked. Chamber pot has a hair crack. Other items scuffed and worn.
A 19th century Scottish pewter Tappit Hen, of typical cylindrical baluster form, the loop handle extending to a scroll thumb piece, with incised banding to the body, 26cm high, along with two pewter measures, each of cylindrical form with applied angular handles, touch marks to the rim on both, 14cm and 10cm high, a pewter tankard, 10cm high, a pewter baluster form caster, 11cm high and a pair of candle snuffers (6)
George III silver tankard of baluster form, with leaf mounted scroll handle (London1778) Joseph Lock. All at approximately 12ozs. 13cm overall height.Condition report: General overall condition good, commensurate with age and use, some surface marks and scratching, surface has some denting, minor creasing and pitting, body has been polished and possibly engraving removed. Lower handle mount, where it joins body, has been repaired and reinforced, base is distorted, possibly compressed and repaired. Marks are clear.

All at approximately 10ozs. 14cm overall height.Condition report: General overall condition very good, some minor surface scratching and pitting, rim is nicked in places, base slightly distorted. Marks are clear
George II silver tankard of cylindrical form with engraved armorial shield, scroll handle with heart terminal and hinged domed cover with scroll thumbpiece (London 1752) Maker's mark unidentifed. Tankard is fully marked on body and inside cover, maker's mark only on handle. Cover hinge pin loose, lower handle joint repaired. All at approximately 21 troy oz. 18cm overall height.
Pair of Old Sheffield plate domed covers, with fluted and gadrooned decoration and hallmarked silver coronet finials, together with a silver plated tankard, with engraved coronet A. Domed covers 21.2cm diameter. (3)Provenance: removed from Bramfield Folly, SuffolkGeneral overall condition worn, copper is visible on all highspots and interior, lead is visible on borders, rims slightly distorted. Silver coronet finials are good, hallmarked London 1841, fasteners not marked. Silver plated tankard is good, surface tarnish and minor scratching, no damage.

Some glaze loss to the handle. A few small chips to the base. Light hairlines around the rim.
