An 18th century Chinese Canton export ware tankard, typically decorated with figures within a landscape (handle missing); together with an 18th century Chinese export tin glazed plate; and a stoneware bowl (3). Tankard – several minor chips to rim, handle has been snapped off and decorated over, decoration lightly rubbed.Plate – restoration evident to rim, some minor chips.Bowl – some large chips to rim, decorated rubbed in places, some scratches and other marks.
A George III silver tankard, tapering cylindrical with upper and lower reeded sections, the domed cover with ball finial and engraved with the initial B, the handle with shell thumb piece, the base with glass bottom, the body engraved with a tall ship possibly the Marquis of Lansdown, London, 1797, maker's mark probably that of John Robins, 19 cm high overall , 993.6 grams gross Note: By repute the initial B is that of Boulderson for Joseph (1764-1828) who joined the East India Company in 1785 and quickly rose through the rank. He was appointed Captain of the 'Marquis of Lansdown' in 1792 which traded between London and Calcutta.
A James II silver lidded tankard, flat top domed hinged cover, scroll thumb piece, scroll handle, the whole thought to be later chinoiserie decorated with oriental figures amongst foliage, maker possibly John Ruslen, London 1686, height 20cm, approximate weight 1206g, (later repairs/alterations)
A George II silver tankard of Dr Johnson interest, stepped dome lid and scroll style thumb piece attached to the handle with a large hinge, the handle of tapering form leading to a heart shaped terminal, the main body of plain silver with a waist band a slightly flared stepped base, the tankard hallmarked for London 1735, the maker probably Richard Bayley, (RB in a rectangular field) and shows a foliate centred cartouche later engraved 'This I give to my esteemed friend Dr. Samuel Johnson. When this you see remember me, C.H, 1762', base diameter 13.5cm, lid diameter 12cm, height to thumb piece top approximately 18cm, weight approximately 752g/24.18 oztNotes: It is possible, but not certain that C.H refers to Charles Hitch, a bookseller in Paternoster Row circa 1733-64. He was one of the publishers of Johnson's Dictionary in 1755. He is thought to have died in 1764 and although there isn't any existing correspondence between the two men, Johnson refers
