A George III silver straight-tapered tankard, maker`s mark `W.B`, London 1794, with an open thumb piece, a moulded harp handle, the cover engraved with a presentation inscription, the base with a reeded band, a glass base, 14cm (5 1/2in) high, loaded. See Grimwade no. 3463 for William Basnett of Bath, mark entered 1784.. The presentation inscription reads: `Made from Silver Ore part of the Cargo of the S. Jago Register(?) Ship Captured by the Phaeton Frigate 14th April 1793`. The Phaeton was a 5th rater carrying 38 guns and was launched at Liverpool in 1782 and disposed of in 1827. On 14th April 1793, whilst with a squadron en route for the Mediterranean, captured the San Iago, a large Spanish galleon, under French colours and the French privateer General Dumourier, of 22 long 6-pounders and 196 men, an event which may have had some effect on the resulting war with Spain.

Statsraad. M.M.`, between the black edged foot and rim, the matched lid dated `1738` and with foliate thumbpiece, unmarked, height approx 15.5cm.
