AN EDWARD VII TANKARD the domed lid with bifurcated thumbpiece, the tapered cylindrical body with moulded girdle, 14.5cm h, apparently no maker`s mark, London 1901, base engraved CARRINGTON & CO 130 REGENT ST W, 15ozs ++Despite the lack of a maker`s mark undoubtedly genuine and in good condition with small dent to the top of the domed cover, neatly engraved with a contemporary prize inscription
A JAMES II TANKARD with domed lid and foot, later chased with a family seated around their hearth, a sportsman at the open door, the lid with chinoiserie thumbpiece and armorial finial, 30cm h, by Timothy Ley, London 1686, 57ozs Provenance: The arms are those of Thomas Brocklehurst of Macclesfield, banker and Martha Mary, his wife, only surviving child of Thomas Unett of Market Drayton, Shropshire. They were married on 12 August 1823 and the present tankard was presumably embellished and given its `antiquarian` dress at that time. Thomas was descended from a long line of highly successful merchants and bankers in Macclesfield, Cheshire and the Dent-Brocklehurst family of Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire are descended from his elder brother. The terminal of the handle is engraved GAP HOUSE and the panels around the foot record the names of its earlier owners from OLIVER AND JOANNA BROCKLEHURST 1549, 2ND EDW IV to THOMAS & MARTHA BROCKLEHURST 1823 3RD GEORGE IV. ++In well preserved condition from the early 19th c date when the tankard was given its `antiquarian` dress in presumably about 1823.

* A Casualty Pair to 2nd Lieutenant A.A. Inglis, Royal Engineers, Killed in Action 26.9.1916, British War and Victory Medal (2.Lieut. A.A. Inglis.), extremely fine, 2nd Lieutenant Alexander Alves Inglis, served on the Western Front with 126th Field Company, Royal Engineers from 4.2.1916, killed in action during the Battle of Thiepval Ridge 26.9.1916, Inglis is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France A Casualty Group to Fifth Engineer Officer J.L. Paterson, Merchant Navy, who was lost when the M.V. Kars was struck by a torpedo, 22.2.1942, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, War Medal, extremely fine, with transmission slip and letter of condolence from Buckingham Palace, and various paperwork relating to Paterson`s widow Mrs Jean Paterson including her Identity Card Fifth Engineer Officer John Lang Paterson (1913-1942), a native of Glasgow, killed in action whilst serving in M.V. Kars 22.2.1942. On the evening of the 22nd September at 22.57hrs, the Kars was hit by a U-96 G7e torpedo, south of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada which impacted and resulted in the vessel catching fire and breaking into two three days later. The forepart sank and the afterpart was towed to Halifax and beached on 27.2.1942. A total of 45 crew members and 4 gunners were lost. Paterson is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London, A Silver Plated `Battle of Britain` Tankard, engraved `No 222 Squadron, R.A.F., Hornchurch 1940`, by Mappin and Webb, No. 222 Squadron, involved in heavy action in the Battle of Britain from May - November 1940, and an associated silver plated Masonic cigarette box, with presentation inscription to `W. Bro: A. Benabo` (7)
