A pair of early George III silver oval sauce boats by William & James Priest, London 1764, with leaf-capped double scroll handles , gadrooned rims, a quilted girdle, engraved with a crest, on oval quilted bases, 17cm (6 3/4in) long; with a pair of old English shell bowl sauce ladles by Richard Crossley, London 1784, 786g (25.25 oz) gross Two different maker's marks. Grimwade notes that the mark given for William & James Priest (the letters divided by a cross) is not in the register but was taken from a tankard of 1768: presumably entered shortly after James Priest's freedom of the Company in July 1764. The second mark here is probably another unregistered mark of the partnership. The erect boar's head crest recorded for BROOKSBY, CAMPBELL, DELMEGE, GORDON, INGILBY, JONES, KIRK, LASHMAR, LOFTUS, LUNDY, MIDDLETON, NEWTON, O'QUINN, RAYMENT, REASON, ROBSON, SWINHOE, TERY, WEALE, WHICHCOTE and WROTTESLEY.
Hamilton, Calcutta - a tankard of cylindrical design with scroll handle and stepped foot engraved to the body: "To D Campbell", a shield shaped cartouche beneath, boar's head crest inscribed "Holkar Nerbudda, With The Respects Of His Fellow Workmen, S & S, TJB", 12.5cm high, the base stamped Hamilton Calcutta with impressed elephant, 17ozs This tankard commemorates work on the Nerbudda railway bridge, which the state of Indore (then ruled by the Maharajah of Holker) built for the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway Co. in 1877-1880. The bridge was engineered by Sir John Hawkshaw. D Campbell, whose boar's head crest appears over the shield showing a support of the bridge, likely worked on the construction, perhaps as a contractor or site manager
