FLEMING ALEXANDER: (1881-1955) Scottish Biologist, Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, 1945. A.L.S., Alexander Fleming, one page, 8vo, Madras, India, 26th February 1953, to [A. Brockhurst], on the blue printed stationery of the Connemara Hotel. Fleming explains that his correspondent`s letter has been forwarded to him and he continues `I have no objection to your adding my signature to the glass tankard which you propose to present to the Duke of Edinburgh and I enclose a specimen signature` (no longer present). He further states `I am interested because I am Rector of Edinburgh Univs. of which he is Chancellor` and concludes by asking Brockhurst for one of the tankards. VG
FLEMING ALEXANDER: (1881-1955) Scottish Biologist, Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, 1945. T.L.S., Alexander Fleming, one page, 8vo, Paddington, London, 1st September 1953, to A. Brockhurst, on the printed stationery of The Wright-Fleming Institute of Microbiology at St. Mary`s Hospital Medical School. Fleming apologises for not having acknowledged the tankard which his correspondent had sent him in April, explaining that he was in America at the time. In concluding he remarks `I am very grateful to you for engraving it and it will remain one of my treasures`. A couple of very light, minor creases, otherwise VG
4 alloy airship related items. A beer tankard with Good-Year airship in relief. The tankard is fitted with a glass bottom. Height 13.5cm. Plus 3 items stamped with an airship and ‘Zeppelin’ mark salad bowl 30cm, with two servers, all with pale green tinted finish. Plus a round butter dish 14cm with wooden knob to lid with a pale blue tinted finish and a similar small dish 11.5cm. GC some light wear.
A possibly unique period leather tankard from the British Airship R.101. Fitted with a pewter insert with rim engraved in capitals ‘Best Wishes From The Airship Crew’. With a leather outline airship marked ‘R.101’ with registration ‘G-FAAW’. Applied to a thick stitched hide outer cover incorporating a sturdy handle. The base is stamped ‘Made In England’. Height 12cm GC illustrated on Plate 8.
