Prächtiger Elfenbeindeckelhumpen von Lorenz Berg, 1843 "" 1912 Höhe des Krugs: 37 cm. Gesamthöhe mit zugehörigem Sockel: 44 cm. Links an der Stufentreppe des Tempels signiert "L. Berg". Der Humpen, nach elegantem Gesamtentwurf, präsentiert sich auf einem zugehörigen ebonisierten und mit blattförmigen Elfenbeinfüßen gearbeiteten Sockel. Eingezogener Rundfuß mit Perlstabprofilen und Blattdekor, darüber leicht nach oben sich weitende runde Wandung, reich mit römisch-antiker Szenerie beschnitzt. Der kräftige Henkel nachezu C-bogig, mit Daumenrast in Form eines hochstehenden Blattes. Deckelbekrönung in Gestalt einer zwischen Sockeln sitzenden weiblichen Allegorie der Geschichtsschreibung. Die zu drei Viertel der Wandung umlaufende Szene zieht vom Flach- ins Hochrelief und zeigt die Stürmung des Tempels der Sabiner durch die Römer. An der Vorderseite eine nahezu ins Vollplastische ziehende Figur eines geharnischten Römers mit erhobenem Schwert, gegen den sich einer der Priester zu wehren sucht. Rechts eine Gruppe um Hilfe flehender Frauen, links der Altar der Sabiner mit dem "Ewig brennenden Feuer". Im Hintergrund die Säulenarchitektur des Tempels. Eine formal vergleichbare Darstellung findet sich in dem Gemälde des Johann Heinrich Schönfeld (1609-1682), um 1640, das sich in der Eremitage Sankt Petersburg befindet. Die bekrönende Sitzfigur hält eine Schreibtafel über dem Knie, einen Federkiel in der Hand, das Haupt mit Lorbeer bekränzt. Insgesamt zeigt sich sowohl der Aufbau, die künstlerische Gestaltung als auch die Feinheit der Elfenbeinschnitzerei von höchster Qualität. In tadelloser Erhaltung. Anmerkung: Der Elfenbeinschnitzer ließ sich in Offenbach am Main nieder und arbeitete ab 1888 für Gustav Karl Schubö (1839-1905) in Offenbach und wurde dessen Werkstattleiter. Berg unterhielt eine eigene Werktstatt, die 1911 von seinem Neffen Lorenz K.H. Chr. Berg weitergeführt wurde. Neben seinem Beruf als Elfenbeinschnitzer war er auch sozialliterarisch tätig. Eine Arbeit seiner Hand "Jagdstück" wurde im Deutschen Elfenbeinmuseum ausgestellt. 1984 wurde ein von ihm signiertes Elfenbeinrelief "Frühlingsglaube" verauktioniert.
