A remarkable and very rare pewter Royal portrait wrigglework flat-lid tankard, English, circa 1695-1700The drum designed with a portrait of William III, with sceptre, beneath a crown and flanked by the crowned initials 'W' and 'R', all within an oval, the Royal supporters of a lion and unicorn to each side, together with a rose and a thistle, the stepped lid designed with a tulip stem of three flowers, and with front denticulations, 'leafy' rams' horn thumbpiece and hollow handle with spade terminal, hallmarks on top of lid and touchmark in base of John Dunn, London, (fl.1683-1727), (PS35), height 17cm, diameter of lid 12.3cm.Provenance: Former David Little Collection. There are approximately twenty flat-lids with double portraits of William and Mary, see Lot 22 in this sale. For a very similar flat-lid tankard see the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, London (M.63-1945). The tankard, formerly in the Yeates Collection, is by the maker 'TC', but was very likely to have been decorated by the same hand as this Lot. A very rare William & Mary Royal commemorative double-portrait pewter wrigglework flat-lid tankard, circa 1690The straight-sided drum designed with a bust portrait of King William III and Mary II, below a crown and entwined cipher W/M R, all within an oval, flanked by a fanciful bird amongst foliage, the lid with front denticulations and decorated with a spray of three flowers, swan-neck handle with small rams' horn thumbpiece and boot-heel terminal, touchmark inside base (PS9142), height 15.4cm, diameter of lid 10.9cmThere are approximately twenty recorded pewter flat-lid tankards decorated with a double-portrait of William & Mary. The recorded examples are by various makers, but there are instances of near-identical decoration, strongly suggesting individual specialist engravers worked with several London pewterers to produce these highly prized commemorative tankards.

(16.8cm.) wide, 5 7/8in. (15cm.) high, weight without onyx base 16 tr.oz. * Condition: Onyx base with nibbles and natural fractures etc (easily replaced if wanted), pull-off head with buckles to inner sleeve, doesn’t distract, over all very good.

A large Worcester porcelain mug or tankard, circa 1770-1775, transfer printed in underglaze blue with the Bouquets pattern, hatched crescent mark, 14cm high CONDITION REPORT:The mug shows an overglazed chip to the foot, the odd small glazing fault, small frits and surface wear throughout, but no obvious cracks, repairs or restoration.
