Signs of possible splitting, denting and repair to the neck. Possible signs of repair around the handle. Denting to the high-points of the embossed decoration. Denting around the base. Ewer wobbles on a level surface. Some loss of definition to the decoration.Dish: No large dents, splits or repair. Some light misshaping to the rim. Possible signs of solder repair to one foot, however the bowl does sit flat on a level surface. Scratching and light wear throughout, commensurate with age and use.Vase: Moderate denting to the shaped border and bowl of the principal vase. Stem, fittings and base in good order, no large dents, splits or signs of repair. Spill vases have a peppering of small dents to the bowls and borders, but no signs of splitting or repair. The spill vases wobbles slightly in their fittings, but appear secure.

15th century A.D. A gold ring with slender arms and facetted shoulders, facetted trumpet-shaped bezel ornamented with granules and set with a polished emerald cabochon. Cf. Scarisbrick, D. & Henig, M., Finger Rings from Ancient to Modern, Oxford, 2003, item 495, for type. 2.83 grams, 30.29 mm overall, 19.16 mm internal diameter (approximate size British P, USA 7 1/2, Europe 16.23, Japan 15) (1 1/8 in). 14th century A.D. A very large bronze chess piece seal matrix with facetted trumpet-shaped body, pierced trefoil knop finial, small dimple to the upper face for alignment; outer ring of Lombardic text '* hVnDR DE tOttEnORE' for 'Hundred of Totnore' and two lines of abbreviated text to the centre 'co[m]itat’ svssex [county of Sussex]'; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. Cf. Linenthal, R. & Noel, W., Medieval Seal Matrices in the Schøyen Collection, Oslo, 2004, pl.XXVII (367), for type. 34.4 grams, 37 mm high (1 1/2 in). Found by a farmer on his land 'eyes only', in Sellindge, Kent, UK, circa 1992. The Hundred of Totnore in the Rape of Pevensey, Sussex appears with the spelling Tottenore in the Rotuli Hundredorum of 1272 and the name means Totta's Bank. Very fine condition. Excessively rare with text at centre.
14th-15th century A.D. A bronze chessman seal matrix with pierced trilobe finial, ribbed collar, facetted trumpet-shaped shank with incuse 'star' locator above the rim; intaglio design of a heater shield with mural crown above, initials 'R T' flanking in hatched spandrels; the arms a fess fretty between in chief three ravens and pellets, in base a chevron bendy between two 'W' and a trefoil slipped; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. See Harvey, P.D.A. & McGuinness, A., A Guide to British Medieval Seals, London, 1996, for discussion. 17.8 grams, 32 mm high (1 1/4 in). Found West Sussex, 1993. Property of a Sussex gentleman. Supplied with previous illustrated cataloguing pages. It is suggested that the arms are those of the Towers family, due to the mural crown crest and the initials 'R T'. Fine condition.
c.625-550 B.C. A voluminous pear-shaped clay bucchero covered with a glossy black slip, trumpet-shaped neck and rim, high handle and discoid foot, circumferential grooves to the shoulder. See Edmund, The Iron Age and Etruscan Vases in the Olcott Collection at Columbia University, New York, pp.28-29, which notes that jugs of this type are seen in most museums that have collections of Etruscan bucchero vases. Edmund notes that similar jugs come from Cerveteri (Museo Cerite, Monte Abatone, tomb 123, and Banditaccia, tomb 365), Tolfa (Museo Archeologico, Casterllina di San Pietro, tomb 2), and Veii. For parallel from the Olcott Collection at height 12.5cm, dated to ca.600BC, refer Pl.13, no.36; inv.no.PE 39 which came from 'Fiano' (presumably Fiano Romano, a town 40km north of Rome). 170 grams, 13 cm high (5 1/8 in). Franz Bergman, early 20th century Austrian cold painted bronze band of 10 dog musicians playing instruments including the drums, trumpet, horn, cello. triangle, symbols a singer and composer. All ten dogs in the band have the Bergman 'B' urn stamp to the inside of their hind leg or to the underside of the base if larger. The drummer and the cello player are also stamped 'AUSTRIA', average height 8cm.

A RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL PALE CELADON JADE ARCHAISTIC VASE, FANGGU FOUR CHARACTER QIANLONG YU WAN MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1736-95 Carved in low relief, the central section with elaborate taotie masks set between bands of plantain leaves to the trumpet neck and spreading base, the interior incised with a poem and two seals which read hui xin bu yuan and de chong fu, the mouth and foot decorated with key fret borders, the stone with slight cloudy inclusions and russet veining, with a four character mark reading Qianlong yu wan to the base, with a paper label for the collection of Queen Maria of Yugoslavia and for Spink & Son Ltd, together with a reticulated wood stand, 20.5cm. (2) Provenance: by direction of the executors of the late Sylvia Quance (d.20th September 2020). Formerly from the collection of Queen Maria of Yugoslavia (1990-61), from the collection of Gordon W Quance LLM (1931-2017), purchased from Spink & Son Ltd., London, on 17th July 1963, a copy of the invoice is available. Cf. The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Ch'ing Court, National Palace Museum, p.79, no.11, for a related jade fanggu with poetic inscriptions, see also Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum, Jade 10, Qing Dynasty, p.104, no.73, for another example. The Qianlong Emperor is known to have been fascinated with the past and is remembered as a passionate collector of antiques, the poem inscribed on the vase was composed by the Emperor Qianlong, dated to the yisi year (1785). The poetic inscriptions can be translated as follows, 'This precious jade comes from Hetian and has been carefully carved into a gu-shaped vase. Modern designs are too vulgar to use, and so instead I have imitated an archaic style. It is a rare shape with taotie mask designs. The vase was once used as a drinking vessel during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, whereas I now use it to enjoy flowers'. The seal reading hui xin bu yuan, can be translated as 'enlightened mind not far', and the seal reading de chong fu, can be translated as 'sign of virtue within'.
