They were first adopted by George III (1760-1820) after the Act of Union with Ireland in 1800. He, as did later 19th century monarchs, including Queen Victoria (1837-1901), use the arms with a central escutcheon. In the case of the Hanoverian Kings the arms were used with a central escutcheon that was charged with the arms of the Hanoverian estate. Queen Victoria's arms included, after her marriage to Prince Albert in 1840, an escutcheon with arms for Saxe-Coburg. We must therefore turn our attention to the twentieth century, during which all monarchs used the arms here. The inclusion of the cypher of the reigning monarch as ER would appear to indicate that the arms are for Edward VII (1901-1910).With thanks to Roger Whitworth for his guidance with this Lot.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
