A rare Charles II silver ewer, Makers mark S.R with cinquefoil below flanked by a pellet either side, London 1676, of plain helmet shape with a long angular spout and scroll handle with ball thumbpiece, supported on a trumpet foot, later engraved with a coat of arms, 24 cm high, 28oz This style of ewer is rare and was made from the reign of James I through to Charles II. Very few are known, most of which are in institutions, the earliest recorded one dated 1613 belonging to Winchester College, another two dated 1635 and 1662 are at Trinity College, Cambridge. Known examples in private collections dating 1632 and 1674 were exhibited at the Loan Exhibition of Old English Plate, 25 Park Lane, 1929. A late 18th Century jelly glass, the trumpet form bowl vertical facet cut with scalloped border raised on short teared stem, 3.75; another with bell shape bowl cut with medallions, stylised leaves and diamonds below scallop border, raised on facet flattened knop stem and conforming foot, 4 high; two similar examples cut with basal flutes circa 1810.(4).
