A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A MYRIAD OF SHELLSUnsignedJapan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)A densely carved group of various shells, conches and clams of different shapes and sizes, worked in superb sukashi-bori (openwork), two of the shells with a minutely detailed landscape within referencing the 'clam's dream'. The lightly stained ivory bearing a superb patina, particularly to the underside which is warm and honey-yellow. The cord attachment is formed by a small trumpet conch underneath. Unsigned, but similar examples exist by both Gyokuhosai Ryuchin and Mitani Goho.LENGTH 4.3 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor associated surface wear. Royal trumpeters announced the starts of the jousting tournaments William Thatcher (as played by Heath Ledger) competed in under false pretences.This lot consists of a long, mediaeval-style brass trumpet with a wide bell and two hooks from which hangs a red canvas banner with gold-colour fringes. The banner is embroidered with three blue and gold lion emblems representing the dominion of King Edward III. The instrument and banner both exhibit intentional distressing by production to appear antique with tarnishing and grime applied.
