A LATE VICTORIAN GLASS EPERGNE AND PAIR OF LATE 19TH CENTURY GLASS LUSTRES, the epergne in opalescent white and pink vaseline glass, comprising of a central trumpet surrounded by three trumpet shaped receivers and scalloped bowl to base, together with a pair of pink and white lustres with gilt decoration to bowls, frilled rims (3) (Condition report: four prism drops have chipped/nibbled points, one is missing a small prism, the epergne has one loose trumpet and wear to gilt centre)
Ca. 5th-4th century BC.A silver fibula with a coiled pin and an arched body, terminating in a rectangular catch plate that curves upwards, creating a trumpet-shaped finial, adding an elegant finishing touch to the overall design. Fibulas were a common type of clothing fastener used in the ancient Mediterranean world and were popular throughout various eras of ancient Greek history. The Greek fibulas ranged in design from simple and functional to highly ornate and decorative, reflecting the wearer's social status and the fashion trends of the time. Three Musician Angels, Florence, circa 1850's, tempera and gold on wood panels, with punctured nimbus and contours, two angels with a trumpet, dressed in green and red robe respectively, and one angel in a blue robe with a drum, each panel 42 x 15 cm (16 1/2 x 6 ins), each presented within three original architectural or tabernacle gilded wood frames, 75 x 24 cm (29 1/2 x 9 1/2 ins) QTY: (3)NOTE:Provenance: Downside Abbey, Somerset, UK. Painted inscription to verso of each panel 'Presented to Downside School from Alfred Jones of Bath June 1927' (or similar wording).The triumphant angels are taken from the surrounding border of Fra Angelico’s Linaiuoli Tabernacle (1432-3), now in the museum of San Marco in Florence. Richly decorative paintings of angel musicians, such as these examples, were produced in Florence during the 19th century as Grand Tour souvenirs.

With a drawn trumpet bowl and teardrop stem, on a folded foot, with an old label stating 'Belonged to Andrew Wallis father of Henry Wallis the Artist', height 11.5cm, together with four 19th century glasses (5).The George II glass has some surface scratches and general wear commensurate with age and some small inclusions. Chips to the top of the stem and base of the bowl on the diamond cut pattern glass.

It was through his travels that he was inspired to begin a lifelong relationship with the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), becoming a major sponsor of the institute and facilitating the growth of their Asian art department, which is now one of the best in the country. His generous donations to Mia allowed them to establish a fund for the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, one of the few endowed positions of this type in the museum field. He additionally served as a trustee of the institute, advocating for its operational growth. In its turn, the museum established a gallery named in his honor in recognition for his endowment fund and numerous contributions to their collection. The selections here showcase his talent and breadth of collecting, ranging from ancient statues to 19th-century woodblock prints.
