Beano/Biffo The Bear original front cover artwork (1953) from The Beano No 551 Feb 7th 1953. Drawn and signed by Dudley Watkins. The Postman stuffs a cork in Biffo's trumpet but ends up posted in his own letterbox! Poster colour and ink on cartridge paper. Some small sealed tears to lower margin with a small piece missing. 20 x 14 ins. 'The Beano' header is a laser colour copy.

An early Victorian rosewood framed trumpet shaped work table, the circular top with needlework floral panel opening to reveal a fitted interior with various compartments and bobbins over a silk covered basket raised on an octagonal tapering and ringed column to circular platform base and three lions paw feet, 47 cm diameter x 80 cm high
Late Shang Dynasty, 12th-11th century BC. A cast bronze gu vessel with flared trumpet-form neck, round-section body and gently splayed foot; to the mid-section two taotie masks separated by narrow notched flanges on a squared leiwen ground, bordered by double bow-string lines; two taotie masks on a squared leiwen ground to the foot; three ancient characters to the interior foot; to the inner neck an old collector's label. Cf. Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Collection, Smithsonian Institution, accession number F1911.51a-b for type. 975 grams, 22.5cm (8 3/4"). Property of a North East Essex collector; by repute from the Javrosky Collection of Chinese art, brought to the United States from China in 1936. Fine condition, some restoration.
1st-2nd century AD. A carved marble statue fragment depicting the torso of an infantry soldier wearing a pleated tunic tied with a knotted belt; the right arms supporting a curved item, possibly a cornu military trumpet; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Sumner, G. Roman Military Dress, Stroud, 2009, items 13, 29. 14.5 kg, 54cm including stand (21 1/4"). Property of a European gentleman living in London; acquired in the UK before 1980. A Cornicen was a junior officer and one of the trumpeters of the legion. In battle, he would use his horn, called the cornu, to draw the attention of the soldiers to any new order being signalled. Cornicines always marched at the head of the centuries, and were also used as assistants to a centurion. Fine condition, chipped.
