To each box, a collector’s label, ‘Lally & Co. New York’ with handwritten inventory number ‘4289.’ James J. Lally was a renowned antique dealer and connoisseur, recognized as one of the greatest scholar-dealers of Chinese art, who has been a leader in the field for more than 40 years. After graduating from Harvard College and Columbia University, Lally joined Sotheby’s where he held many positions within the Chinese art department. In 1970 he served as the director of Chinese works of art at Sotheby’s in New York and Hong Kong, and by 1983 was named president of Sotheby’s in North America. In 1986, he founded his namesake gallery, J. J. Lally & Co., at 41 East 57th Street in New York - just a few blocks away from the MoMA, to provide advisory services for keen collectors. Lally fondly recalls the moment, not long after he opened his gallery, when a young man walked through the door with a Shang Dynasty gong-a bronze vessel shaped like a gravy boat-decorated with a dragon and tiger and in beautiful condition. It was, Lally described, “one of the most important objects I ever had in my hands.” The young man said he had inherited it from his father and was not really interested in Chinese art himself. He wanted to buy a sailboat and wondered if the gong was valuable enough to pay for that. “I was very happy to tell him that it was valuable enough to buy two sailboats,” Lally noted. The gallery helped to establish New York as a major center of commerce for Chinese art and allowed Lally to concentrate on his own specific interests, particularly early ceramics, ritual bronze vessels, archaic jade carvings and sculpture. Lally brought a learned approach to his work, publishing detailed, scholarly catalog that have remained important reference guides within the field. This meticulous approach continued when he produced his own exhibitions and catalog. Giuseppe Eskenazi, dubbed the “Godfather of Chinese Antiques,” and one of the world’s most esteemed Chinese art dealers, also spoke highly of Lally for his achievements in the industry, alongside William Chak from Hong Kong, and the Marchant family from London. In the spring of 2023, Christie’s and Bonhams conducted single owner sales of Lally’s collection which broke several auction records.Condition: Excellent condition with expected manufacturing irregularities and wear to gilt, minute hairlines, dents and nicks to enamels. (2)The peachbloom glaze has been the focus of scientific research since the mid-20th century. Both the overall soft pinkish red of the glaze, and the areas of clear green which appear to a greater or lesser extent within it owe their hue to copper. Firing in a reducing atmosphere creates the red color, while re-oxidation creates the green. This was therefore a glaze that had to be applied very precisely and fired with great care. Research suggests that a copper-lime pigment was applied between two layers of colorless glaze. The copper-lime pigment was applied by blowing through a bamboo tube with fine silk gauze over the end, to achieve an effect similar to modern spraying techniques. This allowed the thickness of the copper-lime layer to be adjusted so that some areas would be thicker than others. In those thicker areas, there was additional flux, which thinned the upper glaze layer and allowed the copper to re-oxidize and produce clear green. In the other areas, some of the pigment was undissolved making it appear slightly opaque and yet smooth on the surface, while the majority of the copper did dissolve and produced a rich pinkish red and creating one of the most highly esteemed glazes from the Qing imperial kilns. Sold Sotheby's, New York, 19 January 2019, Lot 1033 Literature: A similar example illustrated C. Bangs, The Lear Collection: A Study of Copper-Alloy Socket Candlesticks, A.D. 200 - 1700 (1995), p. 142, Cat. 115. In Old Domestic Base-Metal Candlesticks (1978), R. F. Michaelis wrote about the ball-knop trumpet-based candlestick (a type more commonly found in pewter) as 'a late, and abortive, attempt at a departure from the drip-tray proper, the hollow 'ball-knop' obviously serving a very useful function as a grip for lifting or carrying the piece, but almost completely useless as a hindrance to falling candle-grease' (p. 83). He goes on to note that to compensate, the flange at the top of the socket is wider than usual, which is a noticeable feature of this rare candlestick ** This item is part of the Christopher Bangs collection **.

A WW1 medal pair, bronze cap badge, autograph book, and period photographs, relating to 266153 Pte Ernest George Ewens of the Hertfordshire Regiment, and later the Bedfordshire Regiment. To include: the British War Medal, Victory Medal, period bronze Herts Regiment cap badge on slider, a WW1 era autograph book, containing poems, illustrations and greetings from various soldiers, and various WW1 period photographs of Pte Ewens in uniform. Notes: Pte Ewens’ medal entitlement is confirmed as being the pair only. Contemporary records would suggest that he was part of the territorial force. in the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment. A couple of the photographs included would indicate that he was a music9na in the regiment, as in one image he is pictured holding a trumpet, and another shows him holding a bugle. Another image shows a group of drummers, but it’s uncertain whether Pte Ewens is in this image. Information supplied by the vendor states that Ernest was born in Wood Green, on November 23rd 1897. He enlisted just before his 17th birthday, in 1914, and spent 2 years serving with a Home Service (TF) unit. After attaining the required age, Ernest was sent overseas for service in France & Flanders. He joined the regimental brass band, which managed to excuse him from some of the dreary trench duties. The autograph book is named and dated November 23rd 1914, seemingly a birthday present from his parents. It contains amusing rhymes and poems, written by fellow soldiers, plus some illustrations of camps, particularly from the 30th Company Grenadier Guards. Condition: generally good. Both are in good clean condition, with a good level of detail still present. The medals are both complete with their original ribbons, but these are a little frayed. The photograph are all good, as is the cap badge. The autograph book has a couple of loose pages, but is otherwise good.
