A Lalique "Montmarency" (Cherry) pattern opalescent glass vase of trumpet form (large vertical cracks), 20 cm diameter, together with a small modern Lalique wrythen glass scent bottle with dove stopper, 8.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS The vase literally is broken in half and cello taped back together. There is a chip to one cherry on the break line. The sent bottle there is a chip to the wing of the dove. Otherwise general wear and tear to include surface scratches, water stains etc conducive to age and use. See images for more details.

Including a trumpet shaped red glass vase, mounted with a pewter base, stamped 'Tudric D G Ware, 3008' (22.5cms high). Also with a pedestal pewter bowl with red glass interior, stamped 'Tudric, D G Ware, 3014 (18.5cms diameter). (2). *Condition: Vase, body seems generally fine, base has a few marks and scratches, small indentation to the side of the base. Bowl, seems in good condition.

From an early age she was immersed in the intellectual and artistic environment of early 20th century European modernism. She learnt her craft at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, a school associated with the famous Wiener Werkstätte, and had already made a name for herself on the continent in the 1920s and 30s before the 1937 Anchluss with Nazi Germany forced Rie and her husband to flee to Britain. The artistic climate of late 1930s London was far removed from the sophisticated and elegant city that she had left. Her reputation which was wide-reaching in Europe, did not extend beyond a few admirers. Unable to get a licence to produce pots during the war, she made ends meet by producing ceramic buttons and jewellery for high end fashion retailers. The immediate post-war years saw her work hard to re-establish herself as a potter of note. Unlike many of her British contemporaries who looked into the past for their inspiration, Rie's style was relentlessly modern and experimental, a quality that would permeate her work for the rest of her life. The following three works presented in the sale all date from 1978-1980. Although already in her late 70s, Rie was still at the height of her creative powers and all three works demonstrate her unique method of applying glazes. Right from the beginning of her career in Austria, she seems to have taken an unusual approach to the process. Rie applied her glazes by brush directly to the dry and unfired clay with the resulting work only requiring firing once and thus excluding the usual biscuit-firing prior to glazing, employed by most potters of the period. As Nigel Wood explains in his essay in the exhibition catalogue that accompanies the current exhibition of her work at Kettles Yard (p. 210), the process had certain advantages that appealed to Rie:'Using a system that allowed glazing and firing to follow closely on throwing and turning made production faster, the fired results more quickly assessed, and the new ideas more easily developed. For a potter who experimented constantly through her working life this was a significant advantage.' The ability to apply glazes directly gave Rie enormous artistic freedom, allowing her to manipulate the texture and surface of the vessel to push the boundaries of what was possible. The vibrant blues, yellows and pinks employed by Rie accentuate the sophistication and beauty of her designs. As a woman working on her own, she forged an independent path, producing works that were uniquely her own. She left what is arguably one of the most important bodies of work in the field of studio ceramics and a legacy of innovation which resonated throughout wider artistic world. A selection of Four vintage 1950's era, lithographed water colour tin paint sets appearing in Excellent condition with light scuffs and signs of rust appearing. Manufactured by Page London, a British maker of quality paint boxes with fine lithograph colours. The Page London logo is impressed on the rear. No lithographer is identified. “Made in England” is printed on the paint tray insert inside. Page London paint sets typically depict children painting a scene of whatever they are observing at the time and display "Childhood memories". Lot consists of: Cowboys and Native Americans, a Page decal has covered the lid, Old Western gunfight, , Butterfly, Frog and Snail, Medieval Trumpet player, knight and bard. A 19th century silver plate desk set and epergne by James Deakin & Son. No 11503, with horse under a tree, together with two inkwells and an etched trumpet, with faux banboo edge. 47.1 cm H x 29 cm W x 16.5 cm D Condition Report: Generally in good condition. The glass trumpet has an uneven base however no substantial cracks, chips or restoration. The silver plate has several areas of tarnishing however is not overwhelming or as substantial to that of lot 104A. The decoration is still sharp, no apparent repairs or structural damage.

Comprised of two squared inkwells on a squared base with spherical feet, pen well, horse standing under a tree with wheel cut glass trumpet, no 10939, 51 cm H x 29.5 cm W x 18 cm D Condition Report: Generally in good condition. The glass trumpet has a slightly uneven rim however no apparent cracks, chips or restoration to the glass and base. Small chips to the glass inkwell. The stand does not sit evenly. The silver plate is heavily tarnished and would benefit from a clean, however the details are sharp. No apparent structural damage or repairs.
