Nike standing left on prow of galley left, blowing trumpet she holds in her right hand and cradling stylis in her left arm / BA-SI?EO-[S] ?HMHTPIOY, Poseidon Pelagaios standing left, seen from behind, preparing to throw trident held aloft in his right hand, chlamys draped over extended left arm; monogram to left; to right, dolphin left above star. Newell 68 (obv. die LVII); SNG München 1042 (same obv. die); Dewing 1196 (same obv. die). Newell 94 (dies LXXXV/– [obv. die unlisted for issue, rev. die not known]); Triton XVII, lot 164 (same dies); G. Hirsch 272, lot 219 = CNG 78, lot 434 (same dies). EF, toned, a little die wear on obverse. Well centered. From the Patrick H. James Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 61 (25 September 2002), lot 488.Obverse die LXXXV was used extensively across the early issues at Amphipolis, and was paired with a number of different reverse varieties. The die continued in use long after it developed a die break across its surface. The present issue, however, was the earliest to employ the die, as evidenced by the very faint appearance of the break on all the known examples of this issue.

VGC Plate 4 Note: This lot comes with biographical notes stating that the plate was given to Trumpet Major Tom Romans BEM, senior NCO in the regimental band. On leaving the army he bought a well known Public House in London called “The Royal Tournament”. This plate became part of the regimental regalia in the pub. When Romans became unwell it was purchased by P. Skinner, Chairman of the Regimental Band Association 17/21st Lancers and sold to the present vendor. This plate featured in the BBC Antiques Roadshow programme at Highcliffe on Sea 2005, a “CD” of the programme accompanies the lot.
