A Chinese silver pitcher/claret jug with hinge cover, the baluster body supporting a question mark shape handle emulating bamboo and supported upon a splayed trumpet mouth foot decorated with bamboo, the body decorated all over in repousse work with figures, buildings and garden scenes set against a mountainous and tree studded background. Late China trade period after Hung Chong (1840-1885), maximum height 29.2cm.Provenance: The vendor's great grandfather was Edward Henry Hancock, company director and tea planter, who lived in Surbiton, Surrey. He visited China in the late 1800s and we believe it was at this time that he brought the ewer back to the UK. He was involved with a tea plantation in Ceylon called The Relugas Tea Estate Co. Ltd. Condition report: Bottom weighted with lead inside foot.Weight 809 gms.19th Century.Some over polished faces but a lot of detail still present. Generally good condition.There is no silver mark.
