HODODAFour Satsuma-Ware Vessels Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th centuryDecorated in enamels and predominantly gilt, comprising a pair of trumpet vases, each decorated with the same design of a full repertoire of rakan (Buddhist disciples) around the body, the wide mouth with four tennin (Buddhist angels), each signed Dai Nihon Satsuma-yaki Hododa beneath the Satsuma crest, each 13.2cm (5 3/16in) high; the third a four-legged square box and cover decorated with women and children at leisure outdoors, signed Satsuma Hododa, 6.1cm x 8.1cm (2 3/8in x 3 3/16in); the fourth a three-legged circular box and cover similarly decorated, signed Satsuma, 5.1cm x 9.1cm (2in x 3 9/16in). Four early 20th Century James Powell & Sons Arts and Crafts drinking glasses comprising two designed by Philip Webb, the first of swollen trumpet form with a rope twist stem in dark green, the second with ogee bowl with slender twisted stem and shallow conical foot, together with two further similar examples. Warren MacKenzie (American, 1924-2018). Tall studio pottery ceramic trumpet vase. Glazed stoneware. Stamped along the footrim.Warren MacKenzie was a renowned Minnesota studio potter. A student of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, he is credited with bringing the functional Mingei tradition to the United States, and spreading it through his own art and mentorship of students during his long tenure at the University of Minnesota.Height: 11 1/4 in x diameter 5 in.Condition: The vase is in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or losses. No chips to the rim. Crazing throughout. There are original firing and glazing flaws. Very light wear to the underside, consistent with age and use. No sign of restoration.

Tom Bianchi (American, b. 1945). Large mixed media and foam core sculpture titled "Tromba Marina" depicting a marine trumpet or nuns' fiddle from the "Instruments" series, 1982. Signed, titled, and dated along the verso. Bianchi is perhaps more well-known for his male nude photography in and around New York City.Provenance: Distinguished corporate collection, Minnesota.Length: 5 ft 4 in x width: 15 1/2 in x depth: 7 in.Condition: No major cracks or losses. No visible sign of restoration under UV light. The color is bold and bright. Wear throughout. Along the edges, there are several areas of paint loss, particularly to the top part, there is an area of crack; please see the listing image. Along the back of the sculpture, there are original paint residues throughout. All parts are firmly attached to it.
