WWII INFANTRY REGIMENT NR 56 REGIMENTAL STANDARTE TYPE TRUMPET BANNER, good example of a regimental trumpet banner with the front being in the style of a regimental standarte with finely chain stitched black army eagle with brown stitched detailing held within a bullion wire wreath set upon black Iron Cross, black chain stitched swastikas to the corners and silver wire fringe to three sides. The white silk body of the banner has some wear and fraying in places. Top side of the banner is four leather fixing tabs. Reverse of the banner has silver flat wire wreath with ‘J R 56’ within. A good untouched example of a desirable and visually pleasing trumpet banner.

BAKER' signed below the rainproof pan, pierced cock with bolted safe, roller to the frizzen spring, walnut full-stock of military form with raised cheek-piece, brass furniture including patch-box to the right side engraved with a martial trophy, raised lower tang, the bow engraved with a further martial trophy, single set trigger, three brass escutcheoned barrel keys and large military-style trumpet ramrod thimble, complete with its brass mounted ebony ramrod.

Dafte Of London, Late 17th CenturyWith three-stage barrel turned at the girdle, octagonal breech cut with flutes beyond, retaining traces of an engraved demi-figure amid strawberry foliage, and crudely engraved with maker's name in capitals at a later date, tang (retaining screw replaced) with traces of engraved decoration, border engraved rounded lock (cock, steel, mainspring, and one side-nail replaced, the other side-nail repaired) signed in capitals and decorated with scrolling strawberry foliage with monster-head terminal, the tail with foliated demi-figure drawing a bow and arrow, moulded highly figured full stock (minor damage and repairs, fore-end mostly replaced) swelling (old split) at the rear ramrod-pipe and with raised drop behind the barrel tang, steel mounts comprising associated side-plate pierced and chiselled with foliated monsters, vacant escutcheon en suite, border engraved spurred pommel decorated with graduated beadwork along the spurs and with a foliated demi-figure blowing a trumpet on each side, the cap engraved with a moustachioed human face framed by petals, trigger-guard (tang repaired) with trefoil-shaped finial and decorated with a monster-head and foliage on the bow, turned baluster ramrod-pipes (forward one replaced), and later steel-capped wooden ramrod, London proof marks and indistinct barrelsmtith's mark 31.7 cm. barrelFootnotes:ProvenanceChristie's South Kensington, The J.C.L. A late 19th Century bronze and clear glass centrepiece the heavy pierced base, having floral, foliate and scroll decoration, showing some original gilt finish, clear glass trumpet vase with large bowl atop, and painted decoration, 19¾in. (50.4cm.) high. * Overall very good, the base with some original gilt finish showing, no chips or cracks.
A WOOD NETSUKE OF A DUTCHMAN WITH CHILD Unsigned, Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Typically depicted with shoulder-length, curling hair and exaggerated features, clad in a coat of finely detailed texture with a pleated collar, carrying a boy on his back and a trumpet in his right hand. The expression of each is very finely crafted, the eyes with minutely carved pupils. The wood bearing a fine patina, large himotoshi through the back, 7.3cm. Tall.

Some minor surface scratches, dents and dings as to be expected and commensurate with age and use. With the exception of the maker's mark, hallmarks clear and readable.
