A pair of Victorian steel and wooden hafted halberds, circa 1843, each side with a crest and motto, `William Garnett` and `1843` The crest of William Garnett (1782-1863) of Quernmore Park and Bleasdale Tower, JP and Master Forester of Her Majesty`s Forest of Bleasdale, Lancashire. He acquired a lease of the manor or forest of Bleasdale from the Crown and converted wild lands into meadow and pasture. He built Bleasdale Tower, and served as High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1843. His son, William James Garnett (1818-1873), was a British Conservative Party politician and was a Member of Parliament from 1857 to 1864. It is plausible/credible that non-functional halberds would be associated with armorial trumpet banners in the shrieval ceremonial associated with the opening of the Assize Court, for instance. In the case of the first William Garnett this would have been in 1843.
