A very fine and scarce die-stamped pair by PF (Philip Firmin) bearing London hallmarks to obverse of each. Plate being a crowned laurel wreath with central large White Rose of York mounted on backing plate. Four screw posts to reverse ... boss being a disc with raised floral rim and pierced “West York Rifles”; centre mounted with lion’s mask in relief and fitted with small loose ring for attachment to a chain. 1st West York Militia Georgian Officer’s shoulder belt plate. A very fine and rare example by Linwood. Copper gilt oval plate mounted with silver pierced oval inscribed “First West York Militia”; centrally a silver White Rose of York with gilt centre centre. Reverse with hook and two studs. Retains original chamois liner. Some wear to gilt. VGC Formed 21st August, 1759 at Leeds; redesignated First West York Rifle Militia 12th September, 1853. Became 3rd Battalion The King`s Own Light Infantry (South Yorkshire Regiment) on Friday 1st July, 1881. Notable Colonels included Sir George Savile, The Duke of Norfolk and Earl Fitzwilliam.
18th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers Victorian post 1881 Officer’s helmet plate. A fine and scarce die-stamped blackened example with burnished highlights. Garter star mounted with laurel wreath surmounted by a Guelphic crown resting on a tablet “Middlesex”. Within the wreath a Maltese cross, with ball finals to the tips and lions between the arms; to the centre, a plain applied dome within a circlet “Rifle”; between the base of the cross and the wreath, a scroll “Regiment”. Three of four loops to reverse. VGC Raised at Paddington in 1860 as 36th Middlesex RVC it became the 18th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers in 1880 and joined the Rifle Brigade 1881. Within an ornate crowned laurel wreath, mounted on the backing plate, a circlet inscribed “36th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers” with Arms the Borough of Paddington (viz lined shield charged with two swords in saltire with mural crown) to centre. Three screw posts to reverse. One fixing to mount absent so swivels, otherwise VGC. Formed 29th February 1860 at Paddington; renumbered 18th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers in 1880. 1st April 1908 transferred to the new Territorial Force as 10th Bn The London Regiment. Laurel wreath surmounted by a crown resting on a tablet inscribed “Middlesex”. Within the wreath, a Maltese cross, ball finials to the points and lions between the arms, bearing circlet inscribed “Rifle” with laurel spray above, to the centre a plain burnished dome with applied strung bugle. Between the bottom arm the base of the wreath, a scroll inscribed “Regiment”. Four screw posts to reverse, complete with backing plate. VGC Reformed as 10th (County of London) Bn. Within a laurel wreath surmounted by a Guelphic Crown resting on a blank tablet, a Maltese cross, ball finials to the points, lions between the arms. To the centre, within a circlet inscribed “Rifle Brigade”, a crowned strung bugle. Mounted on the base of the wreath, a scroll inscribed The Prince Consort’s Own”. Four screw posts to reverse and complete with backing plate. Old strengthening repair to junction of crown and wreath one side not affecting appearance. Generally VGC. Rifle Brigade post 1905 pouch belt plate. A fine die-stamped white metal example. Within a laurel wreath surmounted by a crown resting on a tablet inscribed “Waterloo”, a Maltese cross with lions between the arms and ball finials to the tips. To the centre, within a circlet inscribed “Rifle Brigade”, a crowned strung bugle. The arms of the cross bear numerous honours of the Regiment, the wreath bears a further 14 honours. Between the bottom arm of the cross and the wreath, a scroll inscribed “Peninsula” and “Pyrenees”; across the base of the wreath, a scroll inscribed “The Prince Consort’s Own”. Two loops to reverse. VGC Formed in 1860 with the HQ at Wakefield, became the 5th West York Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1880 and the 1st Volunteer Battalion, The King’s Own Light Infantry (South Yorkshire) in 1883.
