Carbine: a Martini-Henry Carbine made from a cut down full length Rifle. Calibre .577 (obsolete cal. No licence required). Full walnut stock. Barrel 21" and cut through by a saw at the Knox form. Metalwork covered in a toned lacquer. Front barrel band lacks retaining pin. Stock has two rings screwed into the reverse side to hang rifle on wall. Hole drilled in front of stock. Ramrod missing. Generally worn overall with a further stock hole.
Rifle: An interesting Boer War single shot .577/450 calibre Westley Richards Martini Patent Rifle. Barrel 32" marked 'Westley Richards' & 'Henry Rifling'. Formerly the property of a Boer Commando (name removed from stock) Left side of action marked 'OVS 2603' showing the rifle was supplied to the Orange Free State Boers. These were known as the £4 rifle, all Boers were required by law to arm themselves. Dated 1896.
