On the side of the box is a rubber stamp I.F.A and a date stamp DEC 1948.The final five images included in the lot description Illustrated online are taken by the vendor who has another identical example which he has opened up to photograph. An extremely rare armourer’s tool used for lateral adjustment of the foresight on the Lee Enfield .303 No.5 Jungle Carbines. The Official designation was the Tool Foresight Cramp No.4 for the No.5 rifle. This is slightly confusing, but then the one for the No.4 rifle was the No.3 cramp! There is a reference for them in Dorsey and Shaffer’s book Gun Tools Volume 2, page 364 ‘This cramp adjusts windage on the British No.5 Mk1 Jungle Carbine front sight. The large hole fits around the flash hider and the smaller hole clears the bayonet stud located under the flash hider. Blackened machined steel with the following markings: Crown E and No.4 Rifle No.5.’

The wood scabbard at this point has a section broken away and missing. The grip is lacking the loop from the pommel. The blade has very minor occasional dark patches around the cutting edge. There are some very minor nicks to the cutting edge but it does not look like it has been fought with or hit against a hard surface. These nicks can be seen by blowing image 12 up, they are just ahead of the light shine on the blade. There are small signs of light pitting that have been polished out. When sighting along the sword blade as if it were a rifle, there is a very slight bend or snake that can be seen. If you blow image 9 up, above the shine of the light there is a slight fault that can be seen. We are not sure if this is a crack, a fault in the blade or a patch of pitting.

The metalwork is in good original condition with crisp marks, slight wear to the edges of the bluing but most remains and is original. The stock has probably been refinished as there is a date stamp which is faint, there is slight oil staining and a few filled dents, this sounds worse than it looks. The bore is good with no pitting and strong rifling. The face of the muzzle has a minor dent which does not affect the crown. The nose cap of the forend might not be original as there is provision for a cleaning rod but no slot in the stock.
