Very good and interesting P56 bayonet. Blade 22.75". Ricasso marked 'Chavasse'. These bayonets were supplied to America for use in the Civil War. The middle man was Caleb Huse who wanted them for the Naval Rifle. The ship carrying the load went down bankrupting Chavasse. However many were salvaged and used in the Civil War. This is a very good example with excellent blade, grips & working press stud. It is in its leather scabbard with steel locket and oval frog stud. However the chape is missing exposing 4.75" of the blade and half the stitching is a/f. The bayonet itself will clean up into an excellent example.
Yataghan brass hilted bayonet similar to the Chasspot Model 1866 Sabre bayonet. The ricasso is marked with a small Maltese Cross device and the grip slot is not for the French Rifle. It is however near identical to the British P1856 sword bayonet. The pommel is stamped 'I.Y.' which could be for the Imperial Yeomanry. An interesting bayonet in good condition probable made in Germany for the UK. In its steel scabbard (a little tight at the top).
