A scarce .38” rim fire Sharp’s Patent single shot rifle by Tipping & Lawden, 38” overall, barrel 23½”, the flat topped breech engraved with retailers name “James Bryce. Edinburgh”; the frame bearing the “Tipping & Lawden-Sharps Patent” mark around the hammer screw, with barrel release button beneath the fore end, sheath trigger, and extractor lever on the left side; walnut butt with chequered pistol grip. GWO & C. Sellers in “Sharps Firearms” states that only 150 of this model were made and that very few were made by Tipping & Lawden with steel frames, the majority were of brass. Plate 8
A scarce Lang’s patent 46 bore percussion walking stick gun/rifle, 36½” overall, screw off barrel 23”, pulling back on the “butt” exposes the action and permits the trigger to spring out, the action being cocked with a special tool (now missing), engraved “Patent J Lang, 7 Haymarket, London, No 138” and hinging down behind the action to form a shoulder stock; with interchangeable 40 bore rifle barrel with folding leaf rearsight, the whole painted to imitate bamboo. GC (the paint extensively chipped, the rifle barrel lacking a nipple). Plate 10

An iron bar shot, as used in naval battles to bring down rigging, possibly 19th century; a small iron cannon ball, approx 2¼” diam, corroded; 2 paper wrappers, stated to have been original wrapping for flintlock carbine cartridges c 1800-1840, and for Baker rifle balls c 1796; also approx 20lbs weight of lead bullets, balls, shrapnel balls etc, contained in a c 1945 dated US Army canvas holdall.
