Mixed Group of First and Second World War Medals Believed to be From 1 Family, 1914-15 Star medal, British War and Victory medals “4750 PTE. J. ROACH R.W. KENT R.”, with Silver War Badge, reverse numbered “B123473”; British War medal, “147568 GNR G.E. DOUBLE R.A.”; 1939-45 Star medal, Africa Star medal, Italy Star medal and War medal 1939-45, medals unnamed as issued and accompanied by Rifle Brigade cap badge (slightly bent).John Roach from the Old Kent Road, London, enlisted into the 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment on 10th February 1903 and landed in France on 27th December 1914. He later transferred to 399th Labour Company with service number 591898. He was discharged from this unit as unfit for further service due to illness on 7th February 1919 and issued with Silver War Badge B123473. He died in Warrington in 1925.Born in January 1883, George Ernest Double lived in Perry Hall Road, Orpington when he enlisted into the Royal Garrison Artillery. He served with 285th Siege Battery and was discharged due to ill health on 4th December 1918. Also entitled to a Victory medals and Silver War Badge. In 1939 he was living in Chislehurst with his profession being a Master Butcher. He was also a member of the Royal Observer Corps.

Great War 1914-15 Star Medal Trio to Rifleman in the Rifle Brigade Who was Reported Missing in Action in September 1915, 1914-15 Star medal, British War and Victory medal, “S-8692 PTE. H. A. EDEN RIF: BRIG:”. Good overall condition. 19 year old Herbert Alexander Eden was born in Bermondsey and living in Hackney, London when he enlisted on 27th February 1915. He arrived in France on 31st August 1915 and on 25th September he was with the 9th Battalion Rifle Brigade in the trenches at Railway Wood. The attack on the German trenches started and 4.20am and Battalion was tasked with seizing and holding the enemy trenches, by the time the Battalion left the tranches later that day it numbered 4 Officers and 140 Other Ranks. Herbert Alexander Eden was reported as missing presumed dead during this attack and is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.

Rare Imperial German Bavarian M1869/98 Conversion Bayonet, interesting example being a WW1 conversion using a blade from a M1869 Bavarian Werder rifle bayonet fitted to a Mauser Model 1898 hilt. Acceptance stamps to the reverse of the hilt. Blade edge stamped ‘3’. Remains in generally good condition with just some surface pitting and evidence of cleaning. No scabbard. Blade 46 ¾ cms, overall 60 cms.

MUNDY 1/K.R.RIF: C.”, 1914 Star medal with original August-November clasp, “10883PTE. T.J. MUNDAY 2/K.R.RIF: C.”, British War and Victory medals, “10883 CPL. T.J. MUNDAY K.R.RIF. C.” Note differences in spelling of surname. With some original documents, including 3rd Class Army Council Certificate of Education, 29th October 1913, Slough branch of The Old Contemptibles Association membership documents (x2), 2nd Divisional gallantry cards (x2) dated 1918 with what appears to be the citations for the Military medal and bar (these in poor condition with considerable edge loss and tearing), ‘on his gallantry on 23rd March 1918 in bringing in wounded under heavy artillery, machine gun and rifle fire’ and ‘On his dash and fearlessness in a raid on the enemy outpost line near Ayette on August 14th, 1918’. Character Certificate, 10th February 1920, Discharge Certificate, 12th January 1929, Original studio photograph of the recipient and an Army friend with a ‘touched up’ enlarged modern copy of the same photograph.Military medal, London Gazette 16th July 1918 - 10883 Cpl. (Wandsworth, S.W.)Born in 1894, Thomas Jackson Munday enlisted into the King Royal Rifle Corps on 13th January 1913, he served in France from 13th August 1914, the issue of the clasp for the 1914 star is confirmed on his Medal Index Card. He was discharged on 12th January 1929 and his Discharge Certificate indicates that he attested for the Royal Air Force in November 1942.164 Military medals and 16 first bars were awarded to the 1st Kings Royal Rifle Corps during the Great War.

Complete with Victorian crowned shako badge, brass plume socket holder with green wool ball pom-pom. Bronzed side badges in form of Garter star to the centre. Victorian 39th West York Rifle Volunteers Officers Quilted Shako 1869-78, good example of a black cloth body shako with patent lower band and thin band to the top. Crowned blackened shako badge with strung bugle having 39 to the centre and strap with ‘WEST YORK RIFLES’. Black wool pom pom. Leather sweatband and crimson quilted lining to the interior. Thin leather chinstrap. Some wear and light mothing to the body of the shako. Good example.
Victorian 1845 Pattern Rifle Officers Sword, regulation blade by Mole No. M2473 etched with crowned royal cipher, strung bugle and foliage, regulation plated iron hilt with fixed side guard, wire bound fish skin covered grip, in its plated dress scabbard with two hanging rings. Blade 82cms. Good condition, plating worn overall.
British 1845 Pattern Officers Sword of the 20th (Artists) Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, fine regulation pattern officers sword with brass hilt having crowned VR cipher to the central cartouche. Grip with the original wire binding. Housed in its steel scabbard with two hanging rings. Polished blade etched with foliage, ‘MIDDLESEX 20TH ARTISTS’ Mars and Minerva profiles above strung bugle and ‘RIFLE VOLTRS’. Reverse of the blade with crowned cipher and Hobson & Sons retailers details. Some surface staining to the blade and exterior untouched. Blade 83cms, overall 101cms.

Pattern 1908 Ross Bayonet Mk 2, blade stamped with War Department broad arrow and Enfield inspection mark, pommel marked 'Ross Rifle Co. Quebec, Patented 1907', held in Mk 1 leather scabbard marked 'R.R.C.' for Ross Rifle Company', the date 1911,and Canadian broad arrow, ithe integral frog has the number '4236' stamped at the back, and the letters 'S' or 'F' and 'L' scratched/carved at the front, possibly by the soldier, the Enfield inspection mark indicates that this was one of a number of Ross bayonets trialed, and rejected, by the British government together with the Ross Rifle, (Part of the Philip Bowes collection)

Remington Rolling Block Rifle Bayonet, marked to one side of the ricasso to the German maker Alex Coppel, Solingen, with a French poincon to the other side, held in steel scabbard, this variant of the French M1866 Chassepot Bayonet was manufactured in Germany by the maker Alex Coppel of Solingen for the Remington Rifle for export to Egypt who then defaulted on the contract, in an ironic twist they were then redirected to France in time for the Franco-Prussian War, small differences between this bayonet and the Chassepot include a slight difference in the shape of the fullers, no tenon cut out on the muzzle ring, and flat rebates rather than chamfered on the back of the hilt, (Part of the Philip Bowes collection)
