The action works correctly but it is very stiff and could do with an overhaul and cleanup. The bore has corrosion within the last third of the barrel however the two-thirds of the barrel from the breech end forwards are in relatively good order with a strong rifling pattern. The stock has dents scratches and marks throughout. The ramrod is lacking.

The action works correctly with a strong spring. The breech plug screw has been replaced with a hex bolt which looks ugly and ideally needs replacing. The fitting of the rear peep sight is not the best we have seen and it does not fold down correctly as it catches on the hammer, there is scuffing on the finish because of this. The ramrod is missing. The stock has a couple of scratches on the butt and an odd dent or mark but is generally in good overall condition.

The barrel and receiver serial numbers match as do most parts of the gun with the exception to the bolt and magazine follower and base plate. The bore is in a similar state to the rest of the gun, dark and dirty and in need of a good clean however it shows a reasonably good rifling pattern with no obvious pitting or damages. There is some fresh corrosion to the barrel where it meets the wood of the stock underneath the rear sight. The cleaning rod unscrews. The stock has a large number of dents scratches and marks, the worst being underneath the rear sight on the bolt side and in front of the steel reinforcement lug on the reverse side of the stock. The action works correctly but is stiff and needs a clean-up to run smoothly. The rifle has been recently proofed and has a new marking underneath the barrel at the muzzle end as well as a tiny CIP mark on the receiver.

The bore shows some signs of wear throughout and the crown has some small corrosion spots. The scope has scuffs to the patterning but no damages to the lenses and provides a clear picture. The zoom works as does the focusing which is a little stiff.

The stock has only very minor infrequent marks. The handguard on the top of the rifle has some shakes (faults lines in the wood) which look to have been stablised at some point, there is a filled hole, see images 14-16 which have recently been added online to illustrate this. The handguard despite these faults appears strong and stable. The black finish to the metal work might have been touched up in places but is currently very good. The bore is bright and shiny with a good well defined rifling pattern. The action works correctly.I have personally seen this rifle shooting on several occasions as it is being sold by a club member. It seems to group well.
Jacob double barrel percussion rifle and shotgun Jacob double barrel percussion rifle and shotgun, made by Swinburn and Co. for The Indian Jacob's Rifles Battalion, 24 inch barrels, one 32 bore designed for Jacob's four winged bullet, the other smoothbored to 22 bore, fitted with dovetailed front sight and folding four leaf rear sight, the last sight being a replacement of the original ladder sight graduated to 2000 yards. The back action locks each marked Swinburn & Co. 1860, the stock with scrolled trigger guard and sprung patchbox marked 'Jacob's Rifles'. Together with a modern gunslip. Jacob's Rifles was a unit of approximately 1,000 men raised by British general John Jacob of the Indian Army. The double-barrelled rifle each was assigned carried a distinct mechanical fit rifling designed by Jacob for a winged bullet as a replacement for the troublesome Brunswick rifle and its belted ball supplied by the British army. These double barrel rifles were sold out of service after Jacob's death and it is at this point this example probably had one of its barrels smooth-bored in order to make it more useable by a hunter. At the same time the bayonet bar from the side of the barrel will have been removed. Section 58(2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18.
