Beattie, 52, Upper Marylebone St.t, Portland Place, London, circa 1840, with 11 1/2in. browned twist barrel rifled with twelve grooves and signed in full on the top flat, blued blade fore-sight and rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves, finely scroll engraved case-hardened breech with pierced platinum plug, finely scroll engraved tang and signed bolted lock, the latter decorated with a stag running down a hillside, blued double set triggers, figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip, engraved blued iron mounts including flat-fronted trigger-guard decorated with a further running stag, horn fore-end cap, silver escutcheon engraved with the crest involving a lion and a tiger, original brass-mounted horn-tipped ramrod, and nearly all its original finish, in original mahogany fitted case lined in green baize with accessories including brass-mounted Sykes Patent powder-flask, brass mould for ball and conical bullet, and a second ramrod, the lid with trade label of 'James Beattie, Successor to Collinson Hall.', the exterior with flush-fitting carrying handle and circular escutcheon engraved with the same crest as the rifle. This rifle appears to be very little used.
