AN OAK PERCUSSION RIFLE CASE FOR A JOHN DICKSON SPORTING GUN with a 32 1/2in. barrel, green baize lined with a John Dickson & Sons label for post 1844 when the company moved to 60 Princes St, Edinburgh, the case retains some original accessories such as ebony cleaning rod, jag and worm, a 13-bore wad punch, a steel oil bottle and some other powder wads, lid separated from frame.

A .65 (CARBINE BORE) FLINTLOCK BAKER SERVICE RIFLE, early 19th century, with 30 1/2in. rebrowned twist sighted barrel with bayonet bar on the right side at the muzzle, plain tang, border engraved rounded lock with 'GR' cypher, engraved 'Tower' on the tail and struck with an inspection mark, walnut full stock (some bruising) with raised cheek-piece, regulation brass mounts including hinged patchbox cover, iron sling mounts, and correct iron ramrod, the barrel struck with post-1815 Birmingham proof marks.

A FINE AND UNUSUAL 12-BORE PERCUSSION 'HOWDAH' RIFLE by J. Beattie, 52, Upper Marylebone St.t, Portland Place, London, circa 1840, with 11 1/2in. browned twist barrel rifled with twelve grooves and signed in full on the top flat, blued blade fore-sight and rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves, finely scroll engraved case-hardened breech with pierced platinum plug, finely scroll engraved tang and signed bolted lock, the latter decorated with a stag running down a hillside, blued double set triggers, figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip, engraved blued iron mounts including flat-fronted trigger-guard decorated with a further running stag, horn fore-end cap, silver escutcheon engraved with the crest involving a lion and a tiger, original brass-mounted horn-tipped ramrod, and nearly all its original finish, in original mahogany fitted case lined in green baize with accessories including brass-mounted Sykes Patent powder-flask, brass mould for ball and conical bullet, and a second ramrod, the lid with trade label of 'James Beattie, Successor to Collinson Hall.', the exterior with flush-fitting carrying handle and circular escutcheon engraved with the same crest as the rifle. This rifle appears to be very little used.

A RARE 16-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE by Joseph Manton, London, serial no. 1514 for circa 1801, converted from flintlock, with 30 3/8in. rebrowned twist sighted barrels (slightly shortened) rifled with twelve grooves, breeches engraved with foliage on the rib and each with platinum plug and gold-inlaid line, signed scroll engraved flat bevelled locks each with stepped tail, figured walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece and chequered grip (some bruising), engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard engraved with a martial trophy and trigger-plate with pineapple finial, silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, and brass-mounted wooden ramrod with worm, London proof marks. Daw, 57 Threadneedle St., London, circa 1861-68, with 24in. browned twist round barrel signed in full on the sighting flat and rifled with four grooves for a Jacobs' four-winged bullet, rear-sight calibrated to 1,000 yards, finely scroll engraved case-hardened breech, tang and signed lock, figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip and fore-end, scroll engraved case-hardened mounts including trigger-guard and hinged patchbox cover, silver escutcheon, original brass-mounted wooden ramrod with worm, and much original finish throughout, London proof marks, in brass-cornered fitted oak case (lid with old crack) lined in green baize and with some accessories including correct bullet mould engraved 'G.H. Daw's Improved Mould' and stamped 'G24', and brass-mounted Hawksley powder-flask, the lid with flush-fitting carrying handle and circular brass escutcheon.

AN UNUSUAL CASED .704 SPORTERISED SECOND MODEL BRUNSWICK PERCUSSION SERVICE RIFLE FOR THE INDIAN MARKET, circa 1850, with 30in. sighted twist barrel rifled with two grooves for a belted ball (bayonet bar removed) and decorated at the breech and muzzle with silver damascened arabesques, border engraved lock finely decorated with an Indian plains game scene, figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip, brass mounts including military trigger-guard, side-plate and butt-plate, and iron-tipped ramrod, in brass-bound lined and fitted mahogany case with some accessories including bullet mould for a belted ball and brass-mounted Barlow powder-flask with 'Improved Patent' top, the lid with trade label of Watson & Hancock, London, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle and circular escutcheon (badly repaired).. Purdey, 314 1/2 Oxford Street, London, serial no. 2350 for 1832, with 30in. rebrowned twist octagonal barrel signed in full at the breech and rifled with ten grooves, tangent rear-sight with platinum centre-line, patent breech inlaid with two platinum lines and with pierced platinum vent, finely scroll engraved tang decorated with a tiger-mask, signed flat detented lock with patent safety, engraved with scrollwork and a recumbent stag, and retaining traces of original case-hardened finish, figured walnut half-stock (minor crack on left side of fore-end) with chequered grip and fore-end, engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard engraved with a tiger on the bow and retaining traces of original blued finish, patent grip safety with finger-rest, set trigger, iron sling eyes, and brass-mounted wooden ramrod, London proof marks, in brass-bound two-tier oak case (lining and partitions removed, tray damaged), probably original, with loading rod, the lid lining detached with Purdey trade label with handwritten loading instructions, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon, accompanied by two additional barrels, the first unsigned 28 3/8in. browned twist octagonal 25-bore barrel rifled with two grooves fitted with tangent rear-sight and side-mounted rail for a telescopic sight, scroll engraved case-hardened patent breech with pierced platinum plug, and wooden ramrod with horn-cap, London proof marks, the second 32 7/8in. browned twist 8-bore smoothbore barrel by Thomas Horsley, Maker, York, scroll engraved case-hardened patent breech with pierced platinum plug, and brass-mounted ramrod, London proof marks, in an associated lined mahogany gun case (partitions removed). PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL.', treble-grip action with side-clips, removeable striker discs, cocking-indicators, bolted automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' and 'BOLTED' details, best bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining some original colour-hardening and finish, 14in. well-figured pistolgrip stock with cheek-piece, sling swivels, engraved and colour-hardened pistolgrip-cap and 1 3/8in. leather covered recoil pad, fore-end inset with blank gold diamond-shaped escutcheon, weight 8lb. 2oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case. The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was completed in 1934.
