Die Laufoberseite mit zweizeiliger Firmenanschrift "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860.". Die Laufwurzel oben mit Kaliberangabe "38-CAL", rechts mit britischen Beschuss und Inschrift "Not English make", ebenso rechts am Systemkasten. Der Boden des Messingzubringers gemarkt "38 CAL". Am oberen Griffband "MODEL. 1873", am unteren Seriennummer. Röhrenmagazin in Lauflänge. Lauf in alter Zeit überarbeitet und mit Röhrenmagazin neu brüniert, dabei das originale Visier gegen ein höhenverstellbares Marble-Visier mit V-Kimme und weißem Perlkorn "Marble No. 2", beide mit Schwalbenschwanz, ersetzt. Am Systemkasten das originale tiefblaue noch schön erhalten, beidseitig mit einigen Kratzern. The march marked "38-CAL", on the right hand side of the barrel british proof marks and inscribed "Not English make", as can also be found on the receiver. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator marked "38-CAL". The upper tang marked "MODEL. 1873", the serial number on the lower tang. Full length magazine tube. Barrel and magazine in old times reworked and reblued. Most likely at this time the original sighty replaced with an adjustable Marble V-notch rear sight, with a white beaded front sight, marked "Marble No. 2", both in dovetail. The wood is original finish and has the usual small knocks and marks but nothing defacing and a pleasing patina. The finish on the action has a lot of original blue which is starting to fade in areas and shows patches or wear from use. The lever has traces of original colour finish. The butt plate has very minor patches of pitting. Action works smoothly. The bore has seen a fair amount of shooting but still has strong rifling. There is small a shadowy/frosty patch around 2 inches from the muzzle, outside this, I cannot see any other faults with the bore.

The receiver has original bluing to it which has minor wear and is starting to fade in places. The lever has faint traces of colour case harden. The barrel may have been either re-blued or touched up. The bore has light pitting marks but nothing serious, there is strong rifling present. The stock has been cleaned up but the finish is probably original. There is short crack to the stock from the left side of the tang and a small chip to the wood where the trigger plate meets the thin part of the wood. There is oil staining to the endgrain of the wood at the forend join and to the area where the butt plate meets the end grain, both of these patches are not too disfiguring.
