Other Notes: Walter Dalrymple Maitland 'Karamojo' Bell was one of the most successful elephant hunters of all time, as well as perhaps one of the most controversial. He was a great exponent of the use of small calibre rifles against large and potentially dangerous game. His argument was a calm carefully aimed shot was just as effective as any large calibre rifle. His favoured rifle for elephant was a .275 Rigby using a brain shot. Bell was a great adventurer, beyond hunting he saw action in the Boer War, served as an aviator in the First World War and gold-panned in the Alaskan Klondike gold rush. The nick-name 'Karamojo' Bell was earned from his hunting in the Karamojo region of north east Uganda between 1902 and 1907. He died in 1957 at Corriemoillie, his Ross-Shire estate. A copy of the entry in Rigby's register accompanies this rifle stating the date of sale as May 31st, 1929 to Capt. WDM Bell.
