Late 19th century, obsolete calibre, breech loading Martini Henry carbine style rifle.Lever action with falling block. No discernible dates or proof marks. The rifle has been fitted with low grade Indian silver mounts, including a wire bound grip to the stock.Size: Overall length 92.5cm, barrel length 48..5cm.Condition: It’s likely that the rifle is a marriage of parts from different firearms. The wooden parts differ in colour and patina. The lever mechanism has jammed, and it would likely require a strip down to free it.The steel elements have a light surface rust coating.
Victoria Cross Interest - a late Victorian era, sterling silver travelling communion set, comprising of a chalice, paten and water/oil bottle.Hallmarked for London 1894 by John Newton Mappin (Mappin & Webb).Complete with original velvet and satin lined leather case.Affixed to to the lid of the box is brass cross pattee, and a hand engraved plaque which reads: In the service of God and King, Padre W.R.F. Addison V.C.William Robert Fountaine Addison (1883-1962) volunteered for the Army Chaplain Department at the outbreak of WW1.His Victoria Cross was won on April 9th 1916 at Sanna-i-Yat, Mesopotamia. His V.C. citation reads:He carried a wounded man to the cover of a trench, assisted others to the same cover, after binding up their wounds under heavy rifle and machine gun fire.In addition to these unaided efforts, by his splendid example and utter disregard of personal danger, he encouraged the stretcher-bearers to go forward under heavy fire and collect the wounded.Size: case measures 13.5cm x 12cm x 8.3cm.Conditon: very good - no damage to the silver or glass parts of the set, just normal signs of light use.The leather case is in good order, with only light signs of use.Notes: the engraved plaque appears to be of the period (circa WW1), and would of been later applied to the Victorian era case. All silver pieces carry matched hallmarks.

East India Company, Bombay Presidency, Malabar Coast, Mangalore, R. Dawson & Co, copper token, r. dawson & co mangalore malabar coast in four lines, rev. standing figure within wreath, a rifle slung over his shoulder, holding an upended axe on the top of a tree-trunk, 26mm, 4.84g/12h (Prid. 339 [Sale, lot 564]; cf. R.J. Ford II, 518). Extremely fine and dark-toned, very rare [certified and graded NGC MS 62 BN] £400-£500 --- Provenance: R.J. Ford Collection, Bowers & Merena Auction (Baltimore, MD), 12-14 November 1998, lot 3577. Owner’s ticket. Although the cataloguer has been unable to locate any information about the issuer other than in the footnote to lot 564 in the Pridmore sale, these tokens are known to exist in two sizes (19 and 26mm). It is thought that the larger token was issued to men and the smaller to women; an alternative suggestion is that the larger token was issued to supervisors or maistries and the smaller to workers. Mangalore itself, after annexation in 1799, became part of the Madras presidency, but as the token names the Malabar Coast and most of the Malabar Coast series was catalogued by Pridmore under the Bombay presidency, it has been retained here. The style of manufacture would suggest an issue date of c. 1860

The action and bolt face area is very dirty from use but there does not appear to be any corrosion or faults under the dirt. The stock is free from splits or repairs, there is some scuffing to the underside of the forend where the rifle has been rested on a surface during shooting. There are other patches of scuffing from the sling mounts as well as the odd scratch found scattered around the stock. The bluing and finish of the gun is otherwise good overall.
