A RARE .690 CALIBRE FLINTLOCK MILITARY RIFLE BY JOHN PROBIN, BIRMINGHAM PRIVATE PROOF MARKS, CIRCA 1790-95 with swamped octagonal barrel rifled with eight grooves and stamped with the maker`s mark, IP within a rectangle, fitted with white metal fore-sight (the back-sight replaced), flat border-engraved lock stamped with the crown mark and signed on the tail, figured walnut full stock swelling about the rear ramrod-pipe, the butt boldly impressed `2` over `13` and with a broad arrow mark feintly impressed on the left of the comb (the stock with slight shrinkage about the lock, minor filled repairs), full brass mounts of regulation type, a pair of sling swivels, and steel ramrod 77.1cm; 30 3/8in barrelLiterature De Witt Bailey, Ph.D., British Military Flintlock Rifles 1740-1840, Rhode Island, 2002, pp.189-190, illustrated.In April 1776 Heneage Finch, Lord Guernsey, later Fourth Earl of Aylesford, recommended that John Probin be allowed to make rifle barrels for the Board of Ordnance. The Board requested that one of Probin`s barrels be sent to the Tower for testing. There are no further references after this. However, there are a number of other very similar rifles to the present one known, some of which have unit markings on the brasswork suggesting that they were issued. Another is preserved in the Royal Armouries, Leeds. See C. J. Ffoulkes 1916, p.350, no.150. For a discussion of these rifles see D.W.Bailey 2002, pp.189-190.

A 26 BORE BOHEMIAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE BY HEINRICH REIMER, CIRCA 1630-40 with octagonal swamped sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves, decorated with a punched band, stamped with the maker`s mark (probably Neue Støckel 917) and name over the breech, flat lock engraved with a garland of Eger-style flowers around the spindle, and an exotic bird on the left, fitted with engraved flash-guard, sliding pan-cover, internal wheel and engraved pierced dog decorated with a flowerhead and a serpent, double set trigger, figured hardwood full stock moulded over the fore-end, the butt with carved cheek-piece inlaid with an engraved staghorn plaque decorated with a woodland scene included a doe and a stag on the left, patchbox with sliding cover decorated with engraved staghorn plaques on the right, and inlaid with a further plaque on the spine, trigger-guard shaped for the fingers, a pair of engraved staghorn flowerhead washers opposite the lock, engraved staghorn ramrod-pipe, horn butt-cap, engraved staghorn fore-end cap, and wooden ramrod with engraved staghorn cap 88cm; 34 3/4in barrelHeinrich Reimer is recorded in Olmütz, Bohemia circa 1607-10.

AN 18 BORE DANISH FLINTLOCK SPORTING RIFLE BY VALENTIN MARR, COPENHAGEN, CIRCA 1740 with octagonal blued swamped sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves, decorated with silver scrollwork at the breech and the muzzle, the former with gold-lined vent (back-sight missing), engraved tang numbered `2`, rounded lock signed on a scroll with foliage above and below, double set trigger, figured walnut full stock moulded over the fore-end (cracked through, the butt with worm damage), carved with foliage about the rear ramrod-pipe and the tang, the butt with raised cheek-piece on the left and patchbox with fluting sliding cover on the right (chipped), brass mounts cast and chased in low relief, including pierced side-plate decorated with rococo ornament, butt-plate with scrolls and foliage enclosing a profile head, trigger-guard with acanthus finial and three moulded ramrod-pipes, horn fore-end cap (chipped) and horn-tipped ramrod 67.5cm; 26 5/8in barrelValentin Marr is recorded circa 1696-1786. He worked with David Bars in Stockholm around 1729. He returned to Copenhagen circa 1733 where he made a number of pieces for the Royal family, many of which are still preserved in the Tøjhusmuseet and Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen. He is considered one of Denmark`s finest gunmakers. See F. Askgaard 1988, p. 320.

AN UNUSUAL 54 BORE BALTIC PERCUSSION BIRDING RIFLE, FIRST QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY converted from flintlock, with heavy swamped barrel rifled with eight narrow grooves, cut with a raised panel set with moulded silver fore-sight at the muzzle, adjustable rear-sight and grooved at the breech, angular tang, curved blued bevelled lock, set trigger, carved walnut full stock of early form, cut with linear patterns, moulded over the fore-end and about the mounts, angular butt, carved with a scroll and recessed for the cheek on the left, fitted with patch-box with blued steel-mounted sliding cover on the right, blued steel mounts comprising trigger-guard shaped for the fingers, moulded ramrod-pipes and butt-plate 95.5cm; 37 5/8in barrelIt appears that this gun was fitted with a precision barrel at the same it was converted to percussion, circa 1830-50.

A 14 BORE SWEDISH PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE BY MEIDINGER, STOCKHOLM, CIRCA 1750 converted from flintlock, with octagonal swamped sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves and chiselled with a band of beadwork at the breech, signed stepped bevelled lock engraved with border ornament and sprays of foliage, figured walnut full stock (small chips), moulded over the fore-end, carved with foliage about barrel tang, raised cheek-piece carved with foliage on the left of the butt and patchbox with carved sliding cover decorated en suite on the right, moulded steel mounts (rear ramrod-pipe missing), including trigger-guard with finial of shaped outline and butt-plate with pronounced heel, solid side-plate engraved with foliage and shell ornament, faceted ramrod-pipe, a single sling swivel (the other missing) and horn fore-end cap (ramrod missing) 71cm; 28in barrelJohan Frantz Medinger was born in Germany in 1720 where he apprenticed to Moritz Friederich Nussbaum circa 1750. He returned to Sweden where he was appointed gunmaker to the King Adolph Frederick (1710-1771) on 4th September 1759. A number of firearms by him, including a gun with gold inlaid mounts, are preserved in the Livrustkammeren, Stockholm. See K. Wennberg 1979, p.38 and N Drejholt, 1996, p. 255.

A 25 BORE SWEDISH PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE BY A. GERHARD, STOCKHOLM, CIRCA 1740-50 converted from flintlock, with swamped sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves, punched with the letters `C.G.L..` and a further series of small letters and numbers over the breech, the tang inscribed with the inventory number `No. 4`, signed strongly bevelled lock, figured walnut full stock, moulded over the fore-end, carved with foliage about the tang, the butt with raised cheek-piece on the left and patchbox with carved sliding cover on the right, steel mounts comprising moulded bevelled side-plate, butt-plate with pronounced heel and tang of shaped outline, strongly bevelled trigger-guard, and a pair of faceted ramrod-pipes, horn fore-end cap, the base of the butt inset with an early inventory tag, and original horn-tipped wooden ramrod 82cm; 32 1/4in barrelAdam Anthon Gerhardt, the son of a goldsmith, was born in Darmstadt in 1705. He worked with David Bars and married his only daughter in 1736. He was described as one of the best living gunmakers and received his Royal appointment in 1748.

A RARE 40 BORE CASED AIR RIFLE COMPLETE WITH AN ADDITIONAL 32 BORE BARREL FOR SHOT BY SAMUEL HENRY STAUDENMAYER, NO. 1084, CIRCA 1800 with browned twist octagonal sighted rifle barrel cut with seven grooves, case-hardened breech signed in a gold-lined recess, inlaid with a platinum line and numbered beneath, the shot barrel formed in three sections with matching breech also numbered beneath, each fitted with figured walnut fore-end with engraved silver caps and silver barrel bolt escutcheons, signed numbered action, finely engraved with border ornament throughout, a rococo garland on top, a sunburst on the right and a trophy-of-arms with the personification of wind on the left, fitted with engraved cocking lever on the right, indicator and safety-catch on the left, border-engraved trigger-guard decorated with a trophy-of-arms, two rayskin-covered signed steel butt reservoirs each with internally threaded collar, and brass tipped wooden ramrods, almost certainly the original: in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize, the lid with trade label for 32 Cockspur Street on the inside, and with brass carrying handle (the exterior with scratches and bruising, the interior with areas of wear), and complete with numbered accessories including bullet mould, pump, and wrenches, and with two spare blued springs 73cm; 28 3/4in rifle barrel, 71cm; 28in shot barrelSamuel Henry Staudenmayer, former workman of John Manton, was gunmaker to the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. He is the maker of a Girandoni-system air rifle in the Royal Collection at Windsor (inv. no. L 409). Two air weapons by this maker are recorded in the Hanoverian Royal Gunroom, one of which was sold Sotheby`s, Hanover, October 2005, lot 868.

AN UNUSUAL 28 BORE CASED PERCUSSION PISTOL BY ROBERTSON, HADDINGTON, WITH AN ADDITIONAL 25 BORE RIFLED BARREL AND SHOULDER STOCK, BIRMINGHAM VIEW MARK, CIRCA 1840 with heavy octagonal browned twist sighted barrel inscribed `Haddington`, scroll-engraved case-hardened breech, engraved case-hardened tang incorporating back-sight and flash-guard, signed scroll-engraved case-hardened bolted lock, figured walnut half-stock, chequered butt, engraved blued spurred trigger-guard, vacant silver escutcheon, silver barrel bolt escutcheons, scroll-engraved slotted aperture for the shoulder stock, horn fore-end cap, original brass-tipped ramrod, and retaining much finish throughout: in a lined and fitted mahogany case, complete with its figured walnut shoulder-stock, with engraved blued-steel butt-cap, and rifle barrel, in the white, and rifled with nine grooves 40.5cm; 16inJ. Robertson is recorded in Haddington, East Lothian Co., Scotland circa 1840-50. He is recorded exhibiting at the 1851 Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace. His son John, was proprietor of Boss & Co.
