CRAUSE A HERZBERG' in gold, silver fore-sight, rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves, breeches each with pierced platinum plug and inlaid with two gold lines, the rib between chiselled in low relief with a stag against a gold ground, scroll engraved tang chiselled with a vignette of a recumbent hind against a gold ground, detented back-action locks each with gold-lined maker's stamp and swivelling safety-stop, the locks each chiselled with foliage and a woodland scene, that on the left inhabited by a stag and a hind, that on the right with a stag being chased by a hound, each hammer chiselled with a hunting dog in a woodland setting against a gold ground, figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip, set triggers, iron mounts chiselled en suite with the locks, the butt-plate tang with a scene involving a running boar, the trigger-guard with a fox chasing a rabbit on the tang, a stag within a roped cartouche on the bow, and a rabbit against a gold ground on the finial, the patchbox decorated with a woodland scene inhabited by a stag and a hind, white metal escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, and later brass-mounted ramrod.

A CONTINENTAL 120-BORE PERCUSSION SCHUTZEN TARGET RIFLE, serial no. 3, Third quarter of the 19th century, with 32in. heavy swamped octagonal barrel with slightly recessed muzzle and inlaid with silver scrollwork at the breech and marked 'GUSS STAHL', hooded fore-sight, tangent rear-sight, patent breech, case-hardened tang with standing target aperture sight, case-hardened floating lock, figured walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece, chequered grip, scrolled trigger-guard retaining some original blued finish, shaped hook butt-plate, rectangular plate engraved 'JONKHEER D. LOPES SUASSO' opposite the lock, set triggers, and original iron ramrod (iron parts discoloured throughout). Other Notes: Jonkeer D. Lopes Suasso was a member of the famous Lopes Suasso banking family. This prominent Jewish family were highly successful bankers in Portugal until circa 1660-70 when Antonio Lopez Suasso fled to the Low Countries to escape persecution. The family bankrolled King Willem III to the tune of 2 mi lion guilders and became firmly planted in society. In 1755 the family acquired the house known as the Frisian Court in The Hague. The last of the Lopes Suasso family died in captivity during the Second World War.

LONDON', and case-hardened foot-plate, much original finish throughout, contained in an old purpose-made woollen slip.

BROWNE / LYNN', walnut half-stock (cracked above lock, old repairs around reservoir mount) with chequered grip, scroll engraved iron mounts, copper ball reservoir, and original brass-mounted ramrod. Other Notes: William Browne is recorded in Lynn Regis (present day King's Lynn), Norfolk, between 1835 and 1853.

LONDON' in gold towards the breech, the gold-inlaid tap-action breech feeding from a short under-barrel tubular magazine, brass action with applied engraved steel panels on each side, that on the left with a safety-catch, that on the right signed 'STAUDENMAYER / LONDON' with cocking-lever, external mainspring and retaining traces of original case-hardened finish, trigger-guard engraved with trophy of arms, the top of the block with applied silver panel, and leather-covered butt reservoir (leather damaged), in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize (compartment lid replaced) with accessories including stirrup-pump, and 26 1/2in. two-stage browned twist sighted smoothbore barrel with gold-inlaid line at the breech and signed 'STAUDENMAYER. LONDON' within a gold-inlaid ribbon, and original brass-mounted ramrod, the lid with Staudenmayer trade label with No. 35 Jermyn Street address and stating "From Mr. Mantons, Dover Street", the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle.

A RARE 18-BORE SARTORIS PATENT BREECH-LOADING FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN BY ANTHONY FARINDON BIVEN, serial no. 5, Circa 1822, with 23 3/4in. two-stage twist sighted round barrel with sprung foliate engraved handle, tip-up hinged breech-block engraved with a dog springing a pheasant and with turned lifting handle, the breech-block locking to the barrel by way of an interrupted thread, foliate engraved tang and flat bevelled lock (cock repaired) signed 'AFB' on the inside and with stepped tail, rainproof pan, pivoting safety blocking the touch-hole and roller, figured walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, engraved iron mounts including trigger-plate with pineapple finial and scrolled trigger-guard decorated with a hound on the bow, engraved silver fore-end cap, and shaped silver escutcheon (some patches of corrosion throughout), London proof marks. Other Notes: This gun incorporates Urbanus Sartoris's British Patent 4107 of 11th March 1817. Sartoris envisaged his idea of a gas-tight breech-loading gun as being of great interest to both the military and sportsmen. Biven manufactured the rifle to Sartoris's patent between 1822 and 1825 at No. 16 Regent Street, London. The design did not prove popular and he went into liquidation in 1826.

A RARE 15-BORE FLINTLOCK SPORTING RIFLE BY WORNALL, Late 17th century, with 37in. swamped three-stage sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves and with traces of foliate engraving at the breech, tang engraved with foliage and a profile head, rounded lock (steel replaced) signed 'WORNALL' and engraved with further foliage, that on the tail inhabited by an animal-head, a bird and an insect, moulded full length walnut stock (some old worm holes in butt, fore-end repaired), iron mounts including trigger-guard with urn finial and butt-plate with long tang, cast and chased silver escutcheon with traces of engraved monogram and coronet, turned iron ramrod-pipes, and later iron-tipped ramrod (some pitting to iron parts throughout), London proof marks. Provenance: Anon., Christie's King Street, 14th December 1983, 157 (described as a sporting gun). Other Notes: The maker is probably Edward Wornall who is recorded in London between 1692 and 1704.

AN UNUSUAL GERMAN 22-BORE MATCHLOCK RIFLE, Third quarter of the 17th century, with 34 1/2in. swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves, the tang and breech-section with sighting groove, rounded lock with swiveling pan-cover with turned handle and external key for setting the position of the serpentine, moulded full stock carved in low relief with a wheat-ear design behind the barrel tang, raised cheek-piece, sliding patchbox-cover, indented iron trigger-guard, border engraved bone fore-end cap, single iron ramrod-pipe, and wooden ramrod with bone tip engraved en suite with the fore-end (some discolouration and minor surface corrosion to iron parts). Other Notes: The key for setting the position of the serpentine does not seem to occur on any other recorded firearm.

R.I', iron saddle-bar with ring, walnut half-stock (some bruising) with feint inspector's mark on the left side of the grip, and rear iron sling mount (some discolouration throughout).

A RARE U.S. .53 GREENE PATENT BREECH-LOADING PERCUSSION UNDER-HAMMER OVAL-BORE SERVICE RIFLE, Circa 1860, with 36in. blued barrel sighted to 800 yards and retained by three spring-held barrel-bands, blued receiver and tang, the latter with bolt-release button and marked 'GREENE'S PATENT / NOV. 17. 1857', walnut three-quarter stock, blued trigger-guard, ring under-hammer, iron sling mounts, iron cleaning rod, and much original faded finish, together with a socket bayonet with 18in. blade of triangular section, the forte marked 'J.D.G.'. (2) @Footnote: Other Notes: Approximately 4,500 of these rifles were made by A.H. Waters Armory, Massachusetts from 1859 until the early 1860s. 1,500 of the rifles were sold in the U.S., 900 of these being purchased by U.S. Ordnance. The remaining 3,000 fulfilled a Russian government contract.

J.M. MITCHELSON / OF THE 16TH NORTH YORK / RIFLE VOLUNTEERS / WON BY / SERGT. R. PEARSON. / PICKERING / NOVR. 14TH 1860', blued scroll engraved iron mounts including scrolled trigger-guard and two barrel-bands, the front barrel-band incorporating the bayonet lug, silver shield-shaped escutcheon, iron sling mounts, and iron cleaning rod, and some original finish throughout.

A NORWEGIAN 17.5mm 'M1849/55' LARSEN PATENT KAMMERLADER BREECH-LOADING UNDER-HAMMER PERCUSSION SERVICE RIFLE, serial no. 7256, Dated '1856', with 37 5/8in. barrel sighted to 800 metres and retained by three spring-held brass barrel-bands, tip-up breech with locking lever struck with a crowned 'K' for Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk, walnut three-quarter stock, brass trigger-guard and iron under-hammer guard, brass butt-plate, and iron sling mounts (some discolouration to iron parts).

A RARE 28-BORE CHARLES HANSON PATENT TEN-SHOT REVOLVING PERCUSSION RIFLE, serial no. 2120, with 23in. octagonal rebrowned sighted barrel rifled with three grooves (rear-sight missing), large border engraved cylinder, scroll engraved action with indistinct signature on the top-strap and marked 'C. HANSON'S PATENT NO. 100' on the right side, patent rammer, the lower tang with safety-catch locking the trigger-mechanism, walnut butt with chequered grip, and scroll engraved butt-plate (heavily pitted and cleaned throughout), London proof marks to the cylinder. Other Notes: This revolving rifle is made using Charles Hanson's patent No. 2497 of 7th November 1855 for an improved revolving firearm. The firing mechanism requires a lever to be raised and the trigger pulled at the same time. The patent also incorporated the reciprocating rammer present on this piece. A Charles Hanson is recorded as a gunmaker in Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1829.

LONDON' at the breech and retaining some original faded browning, rear-sight of three folding leaves each with platinum centre-line, reciprocating gas-seal cylinder numbered from '1' to '6' on the front face, scroll engraved action retaining traces of faded original case-hardened finish, shaped horn grip beneath cylinder, scroll engraved blued trigger-guard, well figured walnut butt with chequered grip, scroll engraved butt-plate retaining traces of original blued finish, and original brass-mounted wooden ramrod with worm, London proof marks. LESOINNE & PIR FILS, LIEGE, Circa 1840, with 29 1/4in. browned twist sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves and with silver-and gold-inlaid signature 'A.M. LESOINNE & PIR FILS A LIEGE', case-hardened breech engraved with a sunburst and foliage and with gold-inlaid initials 'FH', the barrel pivoting at the breech on a hinge-pin with exposed trunnions, case-hardened action engraved with foliage and a bold running border with a further five exposed trunnions and two pierced platinum-lined vents, adjustable rear-sight, the underside with barrel-release catch, case-hardened detented back-action lock decorated en suite, finely figured walnut stock with raised shaped cheek-piece and chequered grip, set trigger, blued butt-plate and scrolled trigger-guard engraved en suite with the action, iron sling eyes, and much original finish throughout. The Yannaghas Collection, Christie's King Street, 1st December 1998, 1.Other Notes: This unusual rifle almost certainly fired a cartridge similar to that used by Gastinne Renette in their breech-loading percussion guns. Other Notes: Issac Dickson patented his design for a walking stick gun with telescopic movement and hinged handle on 8th December 1828 (No. 5726).

LONDON.' and 'PATENT SMOOTHBORED RIFLE' on the underside of the tubes, bead fore-sight, rear-sight of three folding leaves calibrated to 200 yards, foliate engraved patent breeches each inlaid with a platinum line and pierced platinum plug, scroll engraved tang and signed bolted detented locks, figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip and fore-end (chequering refreshed), scroll engraved mounts including butt-plate decorated with a deer hound on the tang, hinged patchbox-cover engraved with a stag and two hinds, and trigger-guard decorated with two rutting stags, silver escutcheon, iron sling mounts, and original brass-mounted ramrod with worm (some scattered patches of pitting to locks and mounts), London proof marks, barrelsmith's mark 'CL'.

A U.S. .50 (RIMFIRE) PEABODY PATENT SERVICE RIFLE, Circa 1866, with 36in. blued sighted barrel, case-hardened action marked 'PEABODY'S PAT. / JULY. 22. 1862' on the left side and 'MAN'F'D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROV. R.I.' on the right side, case-hardened back-action lock, walnut three-quarter stock marked with 'DWB' inspector's mark on the left wrist, 'OCCC / 46' on the left side of the butt, and 'CM' on the right side of the butt, iron mounts including three blued sprung barrel-bands, iron sling mounts, iron cleaning rod, and much original finish throughout. Other Notes: This rifle is one of a contract made with Canada in 1866 for the supply of 5,000 such rifles. Strained relations between the US and Canada saw the Canadians re-arm their border militia units. Only 3,000 rifles were delivered and paid for.

Other Notes: Approximately 2,000 Model 1861 percussion rifles were converted by the Meriden Manufacturing Co. between 1865 and 1867, mostly using rifles manufactured by Parkers' Snow & Co.

A RARE .577 (SNIDER) CARTER EDWARDS PATENT BOLT-ACTION RIFLE OF WAR DEPT. TRIALS TYPE, serial no. 215, with 31in. blued barrel sighted to 900 yards and rifled with five grooves, bayonet lug on the right side towards the muzzle, blued receiver stamped 'CARTER EDWARDS (over-stamped) / IMPROVED / CE / PATENT / LONDON / 342', sliding safety-catch locking the cocking-piece, walnut three-quarter stock numbered '262' on the butt, blued iron mounts, iron sling mounts, iron cleaning rod, and some original faded finish throughout, Birmingham proof marks. Other Notes: The Carter Edwards bolt-action relied on a turning bolt being locked by a single lug formed by the bolt-handle bar. This was found to be a weakness during the War Department trials and the rifle was rejected for consideration for military service.
