A Rare and Impressive silver shooting trophy named to the Skiddaw Grey Rifles. Having figural Victorian solider finial, rifle motif supports and gilded interior held on silver plated base. LONDON 1880- By W & J Barnard Script reads "Finally won by Pritave John Gardiner April 4th 1885" and on the reverse "1881 Presented by the Rev'd H.M Short. M.A (Chaplain) and his family to be shot for by the E company Skiddaw rifles 1st Cumberland Rifle Volunteers.

Single Orders and Decorations, Territorial Force Efficiency Medals, EVIIR, awarded to Serjeant W.G. Pender, 6th (Rifle) Battalion Liverpool Regiment (15 Sjt. W.G. Pender. 6/L.Pool: Regt), toned fine. Only 37 EVII TFEMs to the 6/Liverpool Regiment. Army Order 1/1909. Sjt. W.G. Pender joined the Militia on the 11th January 1893, being given service number “15”; he transferred to the Territorial Army on the 1st April 1908. He was embodied for War Service as a Sergeant 5th August 1914 and appointed Acting Colour Sergeant 31st October 1914. He was discharged on the 9th March 1915 being no longer physically fit for War Service. Sold with copy service papers and a note that states “Regimental History P338 refers.” His service papers confirm the award of the TFEM in 1909.

Rifle Brigade), toned fine Queen’s South Africa Medal Roll for the 5th Battalion the Rifle Brigade confirms that a corresponding three clasp medal was awarded to 5324 Pte. F. Wise.

Gaunt all with King’s Crown; Crimea Medal clasps, Alma, Inkermann, joined by a proper carriage but this turned into a brooch, securing pin missing; and assorted metal crowns, shoulder titles and sweetheart brooches, all good to very good to fine (Lot) Colonel Bingham commanded 1st W, York RE Volunteers. His 1915 obituary states his great interest in the welfare of old soldiers and in the 1892 Crimean and Indian Veterans’ Association. Bosley's have recorded another one of these medals, awarded to Pte C Partington 1st Rl Dragoons, appeared at auction with his Crimean Medals in 1996.
An officer’s shako of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), rifle green cloth, black regimental lace headband and narrow band around the top, plaited cords around the front, with 2 olivets on the left, 2 lines around the back, blackened brass strung bugle badge in front surmounted by cord boss bearing blackened mullet, black ostrich/vulture feather plume in socket, leather and crimson silk lining with gilt stamp of Hawkes & Co, Piccadilly, London, black patent leather chinstrap. A Martini Henry bayonet fighting training rifle, of the type used during both the Zulu War and the 1880s Sudan Campaigns. Made using a standard Martini Henry stock and barrel. Stock marked with VR crown over “VR”, “BSA & Co” & “1877”. Barrel with standard ordnance proof stamps. Early type chequered buttplate, spring plunger in barrel. GC Plate 11
A walking stick formerly belonging to Major General Sir George Colley shot by the Boers at the Battle of Majuba Hill in 1881. Lower section broken off (see below), 29” long, one side having a silver coloured plaque engraved “I.M.O (in memory of) Major Genl Sir George Pomeroy Colley killed at the Amujaba (sic) Hill, Natal, March 1881, fighting against the insurgent Boers. This stick carried by him during the Ashantee War of 1874 and broken over a native’s back for refusing to carry a wounded man, was given by him on his return to Lt Colonel Gosset, 54th Regiment. Plate 6 Note: Major General Colley, after a very distinguished army career, was the Commander in Chief in Natal. At Majuba Hill British troops had seized the hill after a night march and were overlooking the Boer Camp. However, by a sudden rush the Boers captured the hill and in the fighting Colley received a rifle bullet through the forehead killing him. His death and the British defeat caused the British Government to begin peace negotiations with the Boers.

With this lot several items related to the recipient: Seaman Gunner Torpedo man 1st class cloth arm badge of 1885-90 period, his Gunnery Drill book 1882 and Musketry Instruction book 1882; Rifle Practice Instruction book 1885; 2 cap tallies: 1 white with gilt embroidered anchor/ HMS Powerful / anchor and black with gilt wire thread HMS Alexandra; his canvas “ditty” bag printed with his name (some repairs); a rubber stamp of recipient’s “signature”; a black silk apron embroidered with flowers etc, the waistband being a cap tally of HMS Swallow (a Union Flag motif slightly unstitched), the colours on the whole remain bright; a notebook showing diagrams of mines and poems etc (slightly AF), his named bible & common prayer books (latter front cover missing); photocards of recipient, wife, son and HMS Swallow; a touching poem “Think of Me” to his beloved wife Lucy enclosing pressed foliage; news cutting of wedding and his vellum service certificate. Plate 3 Note: Jesse Bates, born 6th May 1864 at Barcombe near Lewes. He served aboard HMS Thalia 2nd July 1882 to 6th October 1882, entitled to Egypt medal and bronze star, HMS Swallow 1 January 1887 to 4th March 1890, HMS Alexadra 8th March 1891 invalided out 4th September 1891. HMS Powerful not shown of his record. An enclosed memorial card shows recipient died May 12th 1893 aged 29.
A Vic officers 1827 pattern rifle volunteer officers sword, curved fullered blade 32½”, etched in scrolled panels on one side with crowned VR cypher, and on the other a strung bugle with “Volunteer” and “Rifles”, regulation steel hilt incorporating crowned strung bugle, stepped pommel, plain backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. A late 19th century Holland and Holland advertisement on linen, in red and black, the main text reads “Holland & Holland, Gun & Rifle Manufacturers, 96, New Bond Street, London” above the Arms of Italy and “By Appointment to His Majesty the King of Italy”, note of Rifle Trials 1883 and other successes of the firm, elaborate floral scrolled border, 16½” x 14”, well mounted and framed in gilt.
