A Victorian silver shooting trophy, Birmingham 1863 maker G & C. Of goblet form with repousse and chased decoration to the body reading "Belper Detachment First DRV Challenge Cup" presented by Capt. H. Strutt and won by Pte. B. Cowley for three years in succession 1888-1890. Raised on quadruple rifle supports on a part florally decorated foot with certificate. 21.5 cms. high.
HOLLAND & HOLLAND. A LEATHER RIFLE CASE WITH CANVAS OUTER, missing internals, red baize lined interior, would adapt for a shotgun, with Holland & Holland trade label and instructional label for 'RIFLE NO. 31464', the lid exterior stamped '.240 D.B.' and marked with a monogrammed 'S' surmounted by a crown. Other Notes: The makers have kindly confirmed that rifle no. 31464 was completed as a .240 'Royal' hammerless ejector double rifle in 1948 for the Maharaja of Bikaner, who was one of the first Princes to accede to the Dominion of India, and he merged Bikaner into the United State of Greater Rajasthan in 1949.

J. PURDEY. A FINE CASED 10-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 2184, with 28in. browned twist polygonal barrel with octagonal breech-section signed 'J. PURDEY. NO. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON' (some pitting to underside and sides of breech-section), bead fore-sight, rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves each with platinum-inlaid centre-line and calibrated to 200 yards, case- hardened border engraved recessed patent breech inlaid with two platinum lines and with pierced platinum plug, case-hardened tang engraved with scrollwork and a tiger-mask, case-hardened bolted detented lock engraved with scrollwork and a scene involving a recumbent red stag, black lacquered walnut half-stock with raised cheek -piece, chequered grip and fore-end, set trigger, scroll engraved blued iron mounts including butt-plate decorated with a head and cape of a red stag, hinged patchbox-cover with a scene involving a boar being chased down by two hounds, and pistolgrip trigger-guard decorated with a tiger on the bow, dark horn fore-end cap, sling mounts, horn-tipped ramrod, and much original finish throughout, London proof marks, barrelsmith's mark 'JP', in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories including iron pincer-type bullet mould, Sykes silver- plated powder-flask engraved with a crest and the motto 'Persevere', wad-cuter and loading / cleaning rod, the lid with J. Purdey trade label, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle and circular brass escutcheon. Literature: L. Patrick Unsworth, The Early Purdeys, p. 83 & 148. Other Notes: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was sold in July 1832 to the Hon. A Craven for the sum of £39. 18. 0. Unsworth notes that this is described as a "Large Rifle". He also notes that the records indicate a barrel length of 30in. which is confirmed by the Dimensions Book, although this also lists the calibre as 16-bore. However the Cash Ledgers record the rifle as a 10-bore. Perhaps this descrepency in calibre between the two record books could also go some way to account for the fact the current barrel length of 28in., which appears to be original, is also in conflict with the Dimensions Book.

LONDON.' on the matt rib, bead fore-sight, scroll engraved rear-sight of four folding leaves calibrated to 200 yards, case-hardened long tang profusely engraved with scrollwork inhabited with a tiger mask, border and scroll engraved case-hardened action decorated with a vignette of a tiger on the left side and a vignette of a lion on the right side, border and scroll engraved back-action bolted locks each signed 'THOMAS JACKSON. EDWARDS STREET', the left lock engraved with a rhinoceros, the right lock engraved with a leopard, 14 1/2in. well figured stock with chequered grip and fore-end, raised cheek-piece, border and scroll engraved iron mounts including blued pistolgrip trigger-guard decorated with a vignette of a creeping tiger on the bow, silver escutcheon, sling eyes, and much original finish, London proof marks.
