dating: 17th Century provenance: Germany, Iron arch of rectangular section complete of an ancient rope; wooden tiller rounded at the center and with rifle butt slightly sculpted with beautiful bone inlays richly engraved with hunter on horseback, dragons, animals of the wood, floral and geometrical motifs. Iron trigger guard, set trigger. Small defects and missing parts. length 62.5 cm.
dating: late 18th Century provenance: Ripoll, Flat plate with oblique-edged borders. Tang engraved and carved qith rocaille and flower on a granulated background. The hammer shaped as a swan's head, provided with clicks on the sides, carved with leaves; the covering of the hammer's screw finely worked in-relief depicting the profile of a warrior with helmet, the surface of the throw with relieved leaves on a granulated background. The upper jaw carved en suite. Watertightness pan, with spark arrester. At the center a cartouche signed 'JPH DOP: RIPOLL' with relieved racemes below, on a granulated background. The back of the batterie with shell-shaped engravings, floral motifs and granulated segments. Cfr: see a miquelet flintlock with the same signature on a Spanish rifle dated 1790 George 4th of the United Kingdom's collection (Royal Collection Trust, RCIN 61443). length plate 13,8 cm.
dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: France, Rifled, round 17,8 mm cal. barrel, provided with clutch for the bayonet, foresight, adjustable and folding rear sight, dated '1851' and with 'VL' mark surmounted by a fleur-de-lis, some pitting and remains of other marks. The inner side with signs of use, groove still well defined. Backward spring lock marked 'LOUIS MALHERBE A LIEGE' and with 'VL' mark surmounted by a fleur-de-lis coeval to the barrel. Working mechanics. Long, wooden stock with remains of Liege stamp on the butt side, the 'VL' stamp is repeated several times under the fleur-de-lis. Iron mounts; Barrel bracket, muzzle ring and ramrod probably replaced. It preserves the rare 'a tige' system inside the breech. This type of rifle was initially equipped with the 'a tige' system invented by M. Thouvenin and applied to rifled weapons from 1846 onwards. As early as 1859-1860, most of the weapons equipped with this system were converted by removing it. This is a rare example that survived the conversion. See 'Armes a Feu Francaises Modeles Reglementaires' by J. Boudriot, chapter 'LES ARMES A TIGE'. length 121 cm.
dating: circa 1875 - 1890 provenance: France, Round barrel, with small left-to-right groove, provided with foresight and adjustable rear-sight, featuring the manufacturing mark 'ST. ETIENNE' at the back, marked in gold. 6 mm cal barrel at the nozzle. Iron frame of squared shape, engraved with leaves and racemes; a montgolfier-shaped decoration at the back, and an open-work in the small revolving bolt to insert the bullet. The grip of the bolt is located at the back. Rebound hammer. Butt made of checkered wood at the base. Iron trigger-guard, engraved en suite. Bakelite butt-plate with relieved, montgolfier-shaped decoration and mark 'PAUL GIFFARD / INVENTEUR' (a small missing segment at the bottom, dents on the screws). The front part with the gas magazine. Made of iron, of cylindrical shape, with various numbers (different from the rifle), instructions to load it and montgolfier-shaped mark. Interesting. The patent is dated 1873. For Paul Giffard (1871-1891) see 'Der Neue Stoeckel', vol. 1 page 432. length 105,8 cm.
dating: 18th Century provenance: Central Italy, Smooth, two-stage 15 mm cal. barrel at the nozzle, octagonal at the first segment with longitudinal cannelures and rings at the girdle, then cylindrical at the second part; silvered foresight. Smooth tang with broad sight obtained from the rifle stock. Roman style lock signed 'A. ROSSI' with small floral engravings and frames, moulded pan. Half wooden stock with checkered segments. Brass mounts. Brass-tipped wooden ramrod and iron cartridge extractor. length 141,7 cm.
dating: 1878 provenance: Greece, Round, rifled, 11 mm cal. barrel at the nozzle (bore clean, visible grooves on the inside), with clutch for the bayonet and foresight, foldaway and adjustable rear sight, various marks including the Liege bench mark and date '1873'. Falling block bolt. Marking 'EM & L NAGANT A LIEGE' and with mark. The dorsal tang with marking in Greek and wording of the Milena model. In front of the trigger guard, the bolt opening knob. Working mechanics. Smooth, wooden butt and fore-end, the butt side with Greek stamp and date '1873', on the bottom crowned 'R'. Marked iron mounts. With bayonet (matching? the joint doesn't seem to fit very well) with metal scabbard. Attached are historical notes collected by the owner, on this rare rifle adopted by the Greek army. length 101 cm.
dating: circa 1800 provenance: Italy or Spain, Heavy, octagonal barrel (remains of groove on the inner side?) with foresight, 15 mm cal. at the nozzle. Miquelet lock with working mechanisms, some pitting, featuring a mark (not clearly legible) at the center of the lock plate. Half wooden stock. Beautiful iron trigger guard with gilded mark inside a relieved ornament. Leaf-shaped front tang. Iron butt plate, worked en suite. The counterplate featuring in-relief ornaments and gildings. Horn-tipped wooden ramrod. Probably a longer rifle converted into a carbine. length 106 cm.
dating: Late 18th - Early 19th Century provenance: Naples, Flat plate, with oblique and shaped borders . Tang with little angel engraved among floral decorations. The plate with frames and curls all over the edge. A the center the signature 'GUZZI' inside a cartouche. The rein is carved in-the-round with a high-relieved small angel straddling a gryphon. The base worked in high-relief with another angel, emerging from leaves and buds. The jaws engraved with frames and with floral carvings, the upper one with relieved lily. The typical curl of the spring of these locks are made in high relief; the outline od the spring with carvings. The pan with a high-relief angel surrounded by leaves. The back of the batterie depicting a relieved baby playing with a small dog and a bird. Other elements with carved and engraved leaves. A work of extremely good quality made by the gunlock-maker Guzzi; very few of his works are known. For Guzzi (the name is not well-known) see 'Repertorio Storico degli Archibugiari Italiani' by Barbiroli, pag. 310: gunlock-maker from Neaples, late 18th / beginning of 19th century; he is known for a lock on a 1790 circa rifle. length plate 14,7 cm.
dating: 1838 provenance: USA, Round, rifled, 52 cal. barrel at the nozzle (clean bore), with foresight. The breech block with bolt action that lifts from below thanks to the iron lever placed in front of the trigger guard. Incorporated in the bolt, the flintlock, with back hammer, pan and batteria. Working mechanics. Remains of the markings 'J.H. HALL / H. FE... / US 1838'. Full, brown stained wooden stock. Iron mounts. Butt plate with some pitting. Iron ramrod. Attached are historical notes collected by the owner.This rifle, manufactured by Harpers Ferry Armory under license from John J. Hall, was the first mass-produced breech-loading military rifle adopted as a nationally issued sidearm. A large number of these models were used in the Civil War and converted to rimfire by the Confederate army. See Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, pp. 556-557. length 134 cm.
dating: about 1860 provenance: USA, Round, smooth, 53 gauge barrel with adjustable rear sight and foresight. Bolt action and lower hammer. Full, wooden stock with iron mounts, the tang marked 'GREENE'S PATENT/NOV. 17. 1857'. Compartment in the butt-plate. Manufactured by the A. H. Waters Armory, Milbury, Massachusetts circa 1859-1860. Only 1500 US examples and 3000 for a contract with Russia. It was the first Bolt Action rifle adopted by the US Army. length 133 cm.
dating: Third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: Papal States, Round, rifled, 12, 7 mm cal barrel at the nozzle (clean bore, visible groove), with foresight, clutch for the bayonet, foldaway and adjustable rear sight, with markings 'EM & L NAGANT' at the base, pontifical mark, various other marks and marks of the Liège test bench. Frame with rolling block bolt with Nagant markings, marks and serial numbers coeval with the barrel. Working mechanics. Wooden butt and fore-end, clearly visible on the right side of the butt side the stamp 'CATHOLIQUES BELGES' with date '1868'. Iron mounts and ramrod. Some pitting on the outside. Bayonet (length 70 cm.) marked with 'S' crowned like the clutch and 'A' inside a circle, different serial number from the rifle and complete with scabbard. Attached are historical notes collected by the owner and information on the marks stamped on the rifle. length 131,5 cm.
dating: First half of the 17th Century provenance: Brescia, Smooth, octagonal, 14 mm cal. barrel; long, rectangular and smooth tang. Big lock with smooth plate, external wheel partially engraved with floral motifs and with typical frame from Brescia, engraved pan provided with sliding pan cover. Two big hammers on the sides carved and decorated en suite and put on carved springs. Inside mark 'IG' under crown in a shield. Very elegant briarwood full stock (restored at the base under the barrel after the lock). Iron mounts and carved decorations (star-shaped), the trigger-guard with fine pierced elements among relieved carved flowers, baluster-shaped tang, trigger inside a pierced and carved mount. Butt-plate with grooved iron border. Iron-tipped wooden ramrod. Iron cartridge extractors. For the mark, see 'Brescian Firearms', by Nolfo di Carpegna, nr. 264. This mark can be found on a rifle made for king Louis XIII of France together with another of a famous member of the Cominazzi dinasty. length 122 cm.
dating: Third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: Belgium, Octagonal, rifle, 10 mm cal. barrel with gravity magazine. Steel frame, finely engraved with racemes and with cartouche 'JONGEN FRERES A LIEGE'. Grooved and carved wooden butt, engraved trigger provided with finger-rest, iron butt-plate. In a wooden case (re-lined at the inside), provided with some tools and a key. length 37,5 cm.
dating: Late 16th Century provenance: Holland, Heavy, rifled and octagonal, 15.6 mm cal. barrel, three frames at the base, two not clearly legible marks and '15.6' (probably the caliber) on the sides, fixed rear sight decorated with a carved leaf, brass foresight. Side pan with pan cover pierced with an opening and a carved pommel. Tang with sight, screw carved as a flower. Lock with flat lock plate with a snake-shaped hammer, the right border featuring a mark with a flower in an oval. Wooden full stock richly decorated with bone plates, partially painted green, some restored, the butt on the side of the lock representing a boar shooting, the opposite part and the counterplate are decorated with beautiful military scenes representing knights and soldiers wearing the uniforms of the XVI century and armed with cannons, powder barrels, cannon balls, matchlock rifles, drum and castle. The other elements decorated with ornamental bands, hop, round and oval plates decorated with floral motifs. Long iron trigger. Bone-tipped wooden ramrod. Small missing parts and defects. Origin: Vendita Galerie Fischer, Lucerne, September 2010, lot 554 with sale for 20,000 fs.Fuse guns decorated with bone inlays are rare and have always been high-level collectibles.The description of Lucerne describes the rifle as German, however it is more likely that it is a Dutch job. In favor of this attribution see similar objects in the Visser collection, part I cat. no. 1,2,3, pages 44/49 and another in the Rothschild collection in Waddesdon Manor (by Claude Blair) no. 96 pg. 243/246. length 165 cm.
