Lots 1166 and 1167 are the former property of the late Rt. Hon. Sir Hugh Beadle P.C., CMG, O.B.E. Sir Hugh was appointed Chief Justice of Rhodesia in 1961 following a career in law and politics. He was perhaps the most colourful and influential personality on the legal scene at the time and was instrumental in many respects during the gradual hand-over of power to Ian Smith's government. He is quoted as saying (although strictly unconfirmed) that if Smith and his Ministers declared illegal independence he would "have the greatest pleasure in stringing them up for treason". He was a great hunting man and famously escaped being trampled by a wounded elephant by throwing his hat to one side in order to distract the animal by taking advantage of its excellent side vision.
