*U.S.S.R. A group of four to Lieutenant Aleksandr Ivanovich Sedov, 283rd Independent Red Banner Motorized Battalion Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class breast badge, reverse engraved '523071' with backplate, For Meritorious Service in Battle Medal, Medal for the Capture of Berlin, Medal for the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, first with minor chips to enamel, very fine and better with research On 25th April 1945, during the crossing of a water barrier near the Niederlehme Silicate Factory, comrade Sedov led the activities of his company's drivers, which enabled the material to be in continuous operation. Despite enemy artillery and machine-gun fire he crossed the men and the weaponry of the infantry regiments of the 290th Rifle Division efficiently and in an organized manner. (4)
*U.S.S.R. A group of three to Machine Gun Platoon Leader Lieutenant Vladimir Stepanovich Krivoruchko, 87th Rifle Regiment, 27th Division, who became a prisoner of war early on in the war and escaped to re-join his regiment in 1943 where he was wounded shortly after. Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class breast badge, reverse engraved '498889' with backplate, Medal for the Capture of Konigsberg, Medal for the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, generally good very fine with Soviet badge for "Excellent Artilleryman" with backplate and original booklet with research During the offensive fighting for the town of Ehlenkrug in the Konigsberg district on 14th April 1945, he showed himself as an exceptionally brave and decisive commander. Skilfully leading his rifle platoon in combat he was the first to engage the enemy. By personal example he inspired the men of his platoon to carry out the combat mission assigned to them. He was the first to burst into the enemy trenches, where he, in a short hand-to-hand skirmish, personally shot 4 hitlerites. Thanks to his brave and decisive attack the enemy were driven of his entrenchments, having suffered heavy losses in manpower. For courage and bravery, displayed during the fighting with the German occupants and skilfully leading his platoon in combat situations, he deserves to be awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class (his award was downgraded to a 2nd class). *U.S.S.R. An Order of Alexander Nevski awarded to Senior Lieutenant Pyotr Antonovich Barikhin, Rifle Company Commander, 113th Guards Red Banner Rifle Regiment who won two awards. Order of Alexander Nevski, reverse engraved '29620' with backplate, good very fine, with research. Awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky twice in April & May 1945. During fierce fighting for the town of Ostrovit on 2nd March 1945 comrade Barikhin displayed bravery, courage and great military skills. Participating in a tank assault, he suddenly broke through to the enemy positions, quickly deployed his company and boldly launched an offensive. As a result of this the village was captured with very few losses, while the enemy who had suffered severe casualties, retreated. During the fighting for the town of Bortiskovo on 3rd March 1945, superior enemy infantry forces, supported by tanks, attacked Barikhin's company twice. With exceptional fortitude and perseverance comrade Barikhin organized the tight coordination between the infantry and artillery, repelled both attacks and killed a significant number of Germans. For skilfully commanding his company in combat, comrade Barikhin deserves to be awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky. Barikhin is also entitled to a second Order of Alexander Nevsky for his actions at Gdynia on 27th March 1945. (1)NB: Awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky twice in April & May 1945
*U.S.S.R.. An Order of Alexander Nevski awarded to Guards Captain Vasily Demyanovich Lipsky, 232nd Guards Artillery Regiment, 97th Poltava Red Banner Order of Suvurov Guards Rifle Division Order of Alexander Nevski, reverse engraved '13025', contemporarily adapted suspension, reverse with scratches to the centre, very fine, with research. Awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky twice in September 1944 & March 1945. On August 12, 1944 the enemy breached our units' line of defence in Chmielnik area, moving in the direction of Szydlow Kurozweki, and Staszow in an attempt to surround and destroy a concentration of our forces located on the left bank of the Vistula River. Comrade Lipsky, who was positioned at an observation post on our forces' right flank, skilfully directed his battalion's artillery fire. He warded off large numbers of enemy tank and infantry forces near Ogledow, set 3 heavy tanks of the new Tiger B type on fire, and knocked 1 out. He destroyed a mortar battery and killed its crew, set an ammunition depot on fire, and repelled up to 5 enemy counterattacks. The enemy's attempt to surround our forces was frustrated and the enemy was halted. (1)NB: Awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky twice in September 1944 & March 1945

An Outstanding Order of Alexander Nevski awarded to Lieutenant Isidor Ivanovich Kovalenko, 1st Rifle Company, 812th Red Banner Rifle Regiment, 304th Zhitomir Red Banner Rifle DivisionOrder of Alexander Nevski, reverse engraved '29891' with backplate, together with four unrelated medals to represent Kovalenko's enitltlement comprising, Order of the Red Star, Medal for Bravery (unnumbered), Medal for the Defence of Caucasus and Medal for Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, very fine and better, with research The excellent qualities of a resourceful, fearless combat commander, Lieutenant Kovalenko displayed in combat during the breakthrough of the German defence lines near the city of Rybnik and during the fighting for the city of Ratibor (March 26th-31st 1945). For example, during the fighting for the town of Fichgrund in the Ratibor region of Germany on March 28th and 29th 1945, Lieutenant Kovalenko, taking a courageous decision, outflanked the enemy from the left and after an assault occupied several houses. Having captured some Faust rounds, comrade Kovalenko started using them to set the houses, which were turned into firing positions by the Germans, on fire, and successfully pushed forward. During this bold operation Lieutenant Kovalenko's company killed up to 40 German soldiers. Pursuing the enemy, comrade Kovalenko finished them off on March 30th 1945 to the right of the village of Dembitsch (Germany), where he killed 23 hitlerites and took two prisoners. The others retreated in panic, being pursued by our troops. In man-to-man combat, comrade Kovalenko killed 4 enemy soldiers and shot 7 soldiers with his machine gun, displaying examples of courage and fearlessness in front of his men and officers. (5)
A BAKER RIFLE BY W & J RIGBY DUBLIN. A Flintlock Baker rifle with 27.1/2" barrel in brown twist finish, coarse rifling in six segments bore. On the steel action is a roller frizzen and a sliding safety catch, Wm & Jn Rigby. The barrel with rear and front sights present, W & J Rigby-Dublin at the breech. Brass furniture with brass compartment in the stock, having a bayonet fitting lug at the muzzle, underslung steel ramrod. Both barrel flat fixing pins are not present in the gun, please note some wood damage/loss is evident around the muzzle area. See Illustration
A .410 S/B SHOTGUN BY GEORGE HANSON. Converted at some time from a Rook Rifle or the suchlike. now Nitro Proofed at .410. Octagonal 28" barrel with sights and very solid construction, like the gun in need of repair or restoration. A quality gun marked George Hanson of Doncaster, under the barrel is A & T Rifling, etc *Rfd/Sac rqd*.
A SILVER ARTIST RIFLES DISH by PROVENANCE PAUL BENNETT VC-MC. A circular silver dish with Artists Rifles badge in the centre, with Hallmark for London 1919. Given to his Godson by Eugene Paul Bennet 2nd Worcester Regt, whose Victoria Cross was gazetted in 1916. Also two framed portrait photographs and a 1929 Victoria Cross Winners Dinner House of Lords Legion book, with presentation inscription. Known by his middle name Paul he became a 2/Lt on the 1/1/1915 formerly Private Number 1253 28th London Regt, into the 2nd Worcestershire Regt. His VC was for an attack in November 1916. Near Le Transloy, France, 5th November 1916. For most conspicuous bravery in action when in command of the second wave of the attack. Finding that the first wave had suffered heavy casualties, its commander killed and the line wavering, Lieut Bennett advanced at the head of the second wave, and by his personal example of valour and resolution reached his objective with but sixty men. Isolated with his small party, he at once took steps to consolidate his position under heavy rifle and machine-gun fire from both flanks, and, although wounded he remained in command directing and controlling. He set an example of cheerfulness and resolution beyond all praise, and there is little doubt that but for his personal courage the attack would have checked at the outset. His Military Cross was awarded on January 1st 1916. He was also Mentioned in Despatches by Sir John French. Born Stroud Gloucester 12/1/1892 and educated at Marling School he enlisted in the Artists Rifles, whilst employed at the Bank of England. He went with his Regiment to France in October 19th 1914. Entitled to 1914 Star & Bar After the war in 1922 he married Violet Forster, they had two children. His son John died young of Pneumonia whilst at Eton, and his daughter Elizabeth died of Cancer in 1978 (served in the WRAF in WW11) In later life he was a Lawyer a QC and a Magistrate, later retiring to live in Italy. The famous painting by Gilbert Holiday of 2/Lt Bennett leading the charge with spade in hand, hangs in the Worcester Regiment Museum. The Legion Book has the inset card details. This copy of 'The Legion Book' was presented by H R H The Prince of Wales to Captain E P Bennett VC.MC, on the occasion of the V.C's Dinner held in the House of Lords, London, on Saturday, November 9th 1929. The first formal portrait of Captain Bennett in Court Dress (QC) wearing his miniature medals. 19.1/4" x 13.1/4". The second in RAF uniform with VR collars, wearing his medal ribbons and ATC on the sleeve. 16.3/4" x 12.3/4" Both bear the studio signatures below the portraits. See Illustration
AN IGS BAR BURMA 85-87 TO THE RIFLE BRIGADE. An India 1854 Service Medal with bar Burma 1885-87, named to 1119 Pte G Bunce 1st Battalion R Brigade. Born in Wiltshire George Bunce enlisted in the 4th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade in March 1877, aged 21 years and 6 Months. Transferring to the 1st Battalion on the 25th June 1877. He served in India for some 6 years, namely in Upper Burma from October 1886 until February 1889. After service at home he was discharged on Termination of Engagement in February 1889. His medal is confirmed on the rolls, copies of attestation and service are with the lot.
A MADRAS RIFLE OFFICERS SWORD & SCABBARD. An East India Company officer in the 36th Madras Rifles Regiment, Indian Army. Battle Honours on the slim 32,1/2" blade are China, Mahidpoor and Ava, on the reverse side is the Rampant Lion . Also on the banners is etched Madras 36th Rifles, a bugle and a Dragon or Griffin. Andon & Co 17th Jermyn St London at the forte, strung bugle below a crown in the steel hilt. Complete with its steel scabbard, at the forte in script is ACB? See Illustration
AN AERIAL BOMB etc. A No 2 Inert Rifle Grenade type, modified for Royal Flying Corps usage, by metal vanes. Usually cloth streamers were used though rare enough in that guise, far fewer of this type are in evidence. In good overall condition with much of the internal mechanism present, standing some 10" high, with Company and 8mm markings. The Cotton Powder Co, Hales Patent, London. Also other partial detonator caps and rifle ammunition inert cases etc, are with this lot.
A COURT SWORD & SCABBARD etc A rapier bladed Court Sword with plated cut steel hilt and shell guard, with leather and steel mounted scabbard. The 31" blade is etched with foilage designs on some half of its length. A Rifle Brigade Swaggerstick, a leather swaggerstick and a Nigerian Police Stick with whistle top. (3)
