An 1877 design Martin-Henry IC1 Cavalry Carbine Rifle of obsolete .577/.450 calibre, a type commonly used by the cavalry (the word Carbine is based on the old French word Carabine or Carabin which translates as mounted musketeer). Problems were, it seems, encountered with the rear sight catching on saddlery and the bucket/holster and two wood-screws were added, one to each side of the stock to facilitate the attachment of a leather or canvas cover for the slide-adjustable back-sight, thus overcoming the problem. This example has the screw holes evident but no screws remain. The rifle is only some 37 3/4" long, the barrel being only 21 7/16" long, it weighs 7lb 5ozs (3.32 Kg) approx. This example has the action in full working order, but has much surface rust and the base of the stock is rotted and has some signs of past wood-worm activity. Variations of Martini-Henry Rifles were utilised in many campaigns of the period including in the Zulu War and gained fame at the battle of Rorke's Drift, where the principle of volley-firing was used to devastating effect with only 139 British troops defending themselves against many thousands of Zulus. Due to the obsolescence of the calibre, the rifle is exempt from the usually stringent Firearms Regulations and is sold as an historic collector's item.
