Attributed to Franz Hansel (1802-1883), monumental mid-19th Century large Bohemian ruby-flashed goblet and cover, the tapered bowl with finely engraved panel of a Turkish horseman posing next to his mount in a desert landscape with palm trees, surrounded by engraved arabesque decoration and with a single oculus viewing lens on the reverse, over faceted baluster stem and spreading foot cut with petal-shaped lobes, the conforming cover with grape and vine engraving and faceted flanged finial, 48cm high overallFootnote: Franz Hansel (1802-1883) is noted for his fine engravings of Turkish horseman and for the understated treatment of his compositions. Possible abrasion to horse’s eyeball and small inclusion to palm frond (both visible under magnification). Approx 35mm area of outer rim edge of bowl which appears to be polished at a slightly different angle.Cover – 4mm x 3mm approx. shallow chip to corner of flange below knop.

MM-O-288 (illustrated).Born in Antwerp in 1920, Marcel Mariën swiftly became one of the most prolific members of the Belgian Surrealist movement.Mariën discovered Surrealism in 1935 through two paintings by fellow Belgian René Magritte during a contemporary art exhibition organized at the Antwerp community centre. He met Magritte two years later in 1937 and subsequently joined the Surrealist group - the youngest member at only 17 years old. It was this year that he made and exhibited his very first surrealist object and his most famous work: L'introuvable, a set of single-lens glasses.His works play and distort the accepted norm, creating bridges between language, image and object, all concurrently playing with the viewer's perception of reality. His experimentation with different media is testament to his versatility as an artist and member of the movement. Aside from his involvement with the Surrealists as an artist, Mariën was a writer, poet and theorist. A MID VICTORIAN DIAMOND CRESCENT BROOCH CIRCA 1870Set with graduated old brilliant cut diamonds with eight cut diamond accents between, approximately 7.12 carats total, gold backed silver settingsSize/dimensions: 10.3cm longGross weight: 12.7 gramsCondition Report: Overall very nice condition with wear commensurate with age and use. All diamonds are present and appear original. The diamonds are very bright and lively, mostly SI clarity (some inclusions visible with a 10x lens), none appear to be nicked or chipped, colour estimated H-J, assessed in settings.
