A 19TH CENTURY IVORY WRITING SET in a fitted case to include a pique-work dip-pen by Sampson Mordan & Co., a steel knife and a seal (lacking a penknife), an Art Deco cased writing set in two-coloured resin with brass mounts, together with a small quantity of seal boxes (empty), three small wooden boxes, each containing a steel seal matrix, a cased brass-mounted lens with a turned wooden handle, etc.; the lens 3.1" (8 cms) long (lot)
Victorian brass portrait camera lens by Andrew Ross of London, no. 2924, 4½" diam., contained in leather case. Condition report: Leather case stained and leather strap broken. Brass hood 4 1/2" diameter, glass approx. 3". Two loose strips visible inside, very dirty, no visible cracks or chips to glass, but possibly some light scratches. Screw top currently seized up, rack and pin not working. Hood rim slightly misshapen and worn and dent to other brass rim. SOLD AS SEEN.

A GOLD VICTORIAN DIAMOND AND SAPPHIRE CLUSTER RING, a large cushion cut pale blueish purple sapphire measuring approximately 10.6mm x 9.3mm x 4.9mm, calculated weight 5.02ct, enclosed within a border of old mine cut diamonds, estimated total diamond weight 1.20ct, colour assessed as H - I, clarity assessed as SI1 - SI2, all claw set in cut down collet settings, ring size K1/2. Approximate gross weight 4.7 grams. (Condition report:- overall condition good; The sapphire has some table wear to the facet edges and a few light scratches to the table visible with the 10x lens, the diamonds appear to be all original old mine cut diamonds, bright and lively, the claws and settings are a little worn, consummate with age, shank is good, possibly a later replacement)
AN 18CT GOLD THREE STONE EMERALD AND DIAMOND RING, an emerald cut emerald measuring approximately 7.0mm x 5.0mm x 4.0mm, calculated weight 0.80ct, two modern round brilliant cut diamonds measuring approximately 5.4mm in diameter x 3.1mm, calculated total diamonds weight 1.08ct, colour assessed as H-1, clarity VS2 - SI1, ring size L1/2, hallmarked 18ct gold, Birmingham 1994. Approximate gross weight 3.4 grams. (Condition report:- overall condition good, however, please note the emerald is loose in the setting and there is a small chip to one corner, visible with the 10x lens, diamonds bright and lively, the settings and mount all I good order)
PORTAL CHARLES: (1893-1971) British Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Commander-in-Chief of Bomber Command 1940. Portal served as a Flight Commander during World War I. D.S., C F A Portal, in his capacity as Major, R.F.C., Commanding 16 Squadron, one page, 4to, n.p. (France), 18th February 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to an aerial operation by Lieutenant R. L. Clapp (pilot) and Lieutenant W. J. Blitch (observer), the narrative stating, in full, 'While patrolling over Lens at 8.30 a.m. encountered one E[nemy] A[ircraft] two-seater at about 7,000 feet and fired one drum at it from Lewis Gun. E.A. immediately returned to his own lines firing a few rounds from rear gun as it went'. Signed by Portal at the foot. A few small tears and slight creasing at the head of the page, only very slightly affecting the printed heading, but not the text or signature, about VG
