A GOULD-TYPE LACQUERED BRASS PORTABLE COMPOUND MICROSCOPEUNSIGNED, SECOND QUARTER OF THE 19th CENTURYThe part-tapered tube screw-fitting at the objective end into a threaded collar positioned at the top of a square section upright cut with teeth for the rack and pinion up/down adjustment of the stage and signed Carpenter 24 Regent St. London, the platform fitted with sprung brass object retaining plate with pivoted plano-concave mirror applied beneath, the whole mounted via a threaded recessed collar onto the lid of the fitted mahogany box containing accessories including forceps, three objectives, and a condenser lens to lift-out the upper tier.27cm (10.5ins) high assembled; the box 18cm (7ins) wide, 13cm (5ins) deep. The design of the current lot was devised by William Cary during the early 1820's and was subsequently published by his former apprentice, Charles Gould, in his 1827 publication THE COMPANION TO THE MICROSCOPE.

He was succeeded by his wife, Mary who continued until 1837.The design of the current lot was devised by William Cary during the early 1820's and was subsequently published by his former apprentice, Charles Gould, in his 1827 publication THE COMPANION TO THE MICROSCOPE.

LONDON, COMPENSATED to the recessed centre, within double concentric scale calibrated in barometric inches annotated 22 to 25 then 26 to 31 divided into hundredths within outer altimeter scale double-numbered for 0 to 5,000 and 10,000 feet divided for every ten feet and with movable Vernier labelled ASCENT to outer edge, the chrome plated case with pivoted magnification lens and knurled crown for adjusting the outer Vernier to a post at the top, (2).The first 8cm (3.125ins) diameter, 4cm (1.5ins) deep; the second 12.7cm (5ins) diameter, 5cm (2ins deep) excluding magnifiers. Provenance: The exhibition and archive collections of Barometer World Museum, Merton, Devon. Elliott Brothers are recorded by Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as succeeding William Elliott and Sons at 56 The Strand, London in 1853. The firm of Short and Mason are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1660-1900 as operating from 62 Hatton Garden, London 1873-75 then 40 Hatton Garden from 1876. They were leading makers of barographs and aneroid barometers well into the 20th century later merging with Taylor Instruments in 1969.

CONDITION REPORT The camera body is in good condition, with some light surface scratches to the chrome, as well as some pitting. There is a small amount of brassing to the viewfinder, as well as to other points on the camera. The lens is in good condition, with some light internal haze and dust. The sharkskin leather wrap on the camera is in good condition.

CONDITION REPORT the camera shows heavy signs of use, with pitting to the chrome, as well as loss of chrome in parts. Brassing to the shoe and the edges. Brassing to the front dial, as well as various other parts of the camera. There are light surface scratches throughout and the lens itself is in fair condition, with some light internal haze and grime. The leather case shows signs of wear commensurate with age. LEICA; an IIIc camera, serial no.400857, fitted with a Leitz Elmar F=5cm 1:3.5 lens, the camera fitted with a 5cm Leitz viewfinder and UV filter and Leica maker's cap. CONDITION REPORT The camera shows some signs of age - it has some loss of chrome to the bottom plate. There are light scratches and some heavy scratches to the chrome on the top. The rangefinder lens has a crack in it. There is some brassing to the dials. the lens appears to be in good condition, with some internal haze and some grime build-up. The leather case has some degradation to it and the strap is still intact.

LEICA; an IIIb camera, serial no.321941, fitted with an Elmar F=5cm 1:3.5 lens, with Leica maker's cap and a leather Leica case. CONDITION REPORT The camera has light surface scratches on the chrome, as well as some brassing to the top plate and to the front dial. The lens appears to be in reasonably good condition, with some light internal haze, as well as some light scratches to the front lens, however it does have some brassing to the aperture slider. The lens is also fitted with an Elmar 5cm filter hood. The Leica leather case has some signs of age, such as scuffs to the front and sides, as well as some degradation of the leather.

LEICA; an III camera, serial no.120931, fitted with a Summitar F=5cm 1:2 lens, fitted with a UV lens and a maker's cap, with a Leica leather case. CONDITION REPORT The body of the camera shows some signs of age, such as light scratches throughout and some brassing to the dials. The leather is in good condition, however the glue is starting to fail underneath the lens, causing a portion to peel away. The lens has some internal haze and dust and also appears to show signs of fungus at the edge of the lens. The case is in good condition, with some signs of wear and marks commensurate with age.

LEICA; an If red dial camera. serial no.688708, with a Summaron F=3.5cm 1:3.5 lens, fitted with a Summaron-Elmar 3.5cm UV hood and a Leitz adjustable viewfinder. CONDITION REPORT The camera body is in good used condition, with light surface scratches to the bottom, as well as some dust and grime commensurate with age. The lens itself has some light internal haze and some dust to the lens. There is a small strip of the leather missing by the flash input.

LEICA; a Model I camera, serial no.25671, fitted with a Leitz Elmar 1:3.5 F=50mm lens. CONDITION REPORT The camera is in good overall condition for its age. As it is Model I, which originally came in black finish, this one may have been sent to the factory for an upgrade, due to the fact that the top and bottom plate are now chrome plated, even though it has a low serial number. This means that the camera could of course have been upgraded at the time, this is backed up by the fact that there are some possible glue smears to the edge of the leather, which suggests that it was re-wrapped at some point. The lens appears grimy, with a slight amount of internal haze.

CONDITION REPORT The camera body is in good cosmetic condition, with light surface scratches throughout. there is a portion of the plastic broken off to the front right of the clear section on the front of the camera. CONDITION REPORT The camera is in very good cosmetic condition, with almost no signs of use, apart from light dust marks. The lens appears to be in good condition, with light internal haze and dust to the exterior. the leather carrying case is in good condition.

CONDITION REPORT All items appear to be in good overall condition. The screw mount extension tube has some brassing to the ridges on each section. All showing varying amounts of use.

CONDITION REPORT The camera body is in good cosmetic condition, with some signs of peeling to the leatherette in places. The 65mm lens has some light internal haze and light surface scratches. the boxed 100mm lens has some light internal haze and dust. Both of the film backs show signs of use. the 220 film back with more light surface scratches than the 120 film back. The speedgrip has light surface scratches and signs of use. The viewfinder appears to have some internal fungus and the rubber eyepiece has begun to perish slightly.

The 150mm lens has light internal haze and dust to exterior. the 75mm lens has some light internal haze.135 film back has a letter W on the side

LEITZ; a 'Fat' Elmar F=9cm 1:4 lens. CONDITION REPORT The lens shows some signs of age to the exterior, with brassing around the focusing ring. Brassing around the edge of the lens and general surface scratches throughout. The lens itself is very grimy and may have some internal haze.

LEITZ; a Hekthor F=13.5cm 1:4.5 lens, serial no.1408088. CONDITION REPORT The exterior of the lens shows some light surface scratching. The lens itself has some scratching to the outside, as well as some dust and haze to the inside. With a Leica maker's cap.

LEITZ; a Summarit F=5cm 1:1.5 lens, serial no.1517168, with two maker's caps and a UV filter. CONDITION REPORT The lens exterior is in good condition, with almost no signs of use. The lens itself shows scratches to the front element and some clouding and haze to the internal elements.

LEITZ; an Elmar F=9cm 1:4 lens, serial no.1498685. CONDITION REPORT The exterior of the lens shows some signs of age, but appears to be in good condition. The leather to the base of the lens appears to have been reglued badly and has been crudely repaired. the lens itself has some light internal haze and what appears to be small patches of fungus. The lens comes with a Leica maker's cap.

CANON; a 35-52R slide duplicator with auto bellows, fitted with a 50mm 1:3.5 Canon macro lens and Canon F1 film camera with speedfinder attachment. CONDITION REPORT The duplicator and camera body are in good overall cosmetic condition, with some brassing to the top and bottom plates of the camera body. The lens appears relatively clear, with some light internal haze and dust. The camera and bellows comes with a remote shutter trigger and a few filters. The lightmeter in the F1 camera is untested.

There are several small dents near to the serial number on the top plate of the camera that appear to have been repainted at some point. the foam seals have started to degrade and may need replacing at some point. The camera lens is dusty and has some slight internal haze. The lightmeter on the camera is untested.

CANON; an EOS 650 film camera fitted with a Canon EF 15mm 1:1.8 lens and an additional Canon EOS 650 body. CONDITION REPORT The EOS 650 fitted with the lens has a quartz date back, whereas the other body just has a regular back. Both camera bodies appear to be in good cosmetic condition, with light surface scratches throughout. the lens is a little bit dusty, but appears clear from any fungus.

CANON; an F1 film camera, serial no.121523, fitted with a Canon 50mm 1:1.8 lens. CONDITION REPORT The camera body is in good cosmetic condition. It is missing the eyepiece for the viewfinder. There is minimal brassing on the top and bottom plate, however there are some light surface scratches on the bottom. The lens appears dusty, however free from internal fungus. The lightmeter in the F1 camera is untested.

Some brassing to the corners. The film seals have been compressed, but appear to be free of degradation. The lens appears to be free from fungus, has some light dust to internal and external lenses. The lightmeter in the F1 camera is untested.

The additional lens also suffers from dust and slight internal haze. The camera, lightmeter and flash are sold untested.
