Camera, Summitar 2 50mm lens, lens cap, case, "Red dial" camera.When Ernst Leitz took a chance on his designers radical concept- a compact, high precision camera, shooting 35mm film horizontally- unlike the movie cameras it was borrowed from- little did he know that the Leica Leitz-Camera would set the standard for the next 100 years of personal photography. Not only did the Leica camera establish a format that persists even in today's digital world, but also a reputation for absolute quality- many of photography's preeminent heavy-weights have sworn by Leica; and many of the most cherished images from the last 100 years of photographic history were captured by the slim, rugged perfection of Leica cameras and lenses. For auction is this 1951 Leica IIIf camera (No. 565164) - featuring adjustable diopter, built in rangefinder, a snowy satin chrome finish, and original, removable folding Summitar 2 F50mm lens. The IIIf series introduced features that would bring Leicas into the ultimate echelon of photographic capability- a broad range of shutter speeds, removable lenses using the M39 screw format, and a flash synchronization port with delay settings. This camera comes with its leather case, a Leica lens cap, and features the Red Dial- a unique derivation of the flash control with red enamel lettering instead of the standard black. While all cameras sold through Whitley's are offered in as-is and un-serviced condition unless otherwise noted, this Leica IIIf's winding knob and shutter release winds and fires. A three stone diamond ring, the three graduated, old brilliant cut diamonds all claw set in white metal, to the carved gallery, tapering shoulders and plain white metal hoop, unmarked, size O, gross weight 3.3gms CONDITION REPORT: The central stone measures approx. 6.33mm diameter and 3.73mm deep resulting in a carat weight of approximately 0.91ct, the further two stones:Stone 1 measures approx. 5.67mm diameter and 3.8mm deep resulting in an approx. carat weight of 0.74ct.Stone 2 measures approx. 5.70mm diameter and 3.79mm deep resulting in am approx. carat weight 0.75ct. Some inclusions visible using a 10x lens. All stones are mounted therefore it is impossible to ascertain accurate colour gradings for these stones.

A diamond set daisy cluster ring, the central old brilliant cut diamond, within a surround of fourteen smaller diamonds, all set in white metal to the tapering shoulders and plain yellow metal hoop, unmarked, size R/S, weight 2.75gms CONDITION REPORT: Daisy measures 9.42mm diameter approximately overall, central diamond measures approx. 5.8mm diameter and 3.12mm deep resulting in carat weight of approximately 0.65ct. Outer stones between 0.01ct and 0.02ct. Inclusions to the central stone visible using a 10x lens, gallery is of garland swag type and wearing through in places, the piece would benefit from a thorough clean, band misshapen and thinned, no evidence of any marks indicating may have been resized at some point.

Inclusions visible within the stone when viewed under a 10x lens. Wear to the hoop and shoulders commensurate with age and usage, marks to the hoop rubbed. It is not possible to estimate colour as the stone is set.

FREDERICK WHITEHEAD (1853-1938) 'Bulbarrow' An extensive landscape depicting sheep atop Bulbarrow Hill, Dorset, overlooking the Blackmore Vale, signed and dated 1894 lower left, oil on canvas, 35cm x 55cm Provenance: Commissioned by Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) as a reduced version of Whitehead's 'Blackmore Vale (from Bulbarrow)' (exhibited Bond Street, London). The Estate of Dr. E. W. Mann, Thomas Hardy's physician, and thence by descentAmong the first British impressionists exhibiting art specifically relating to Hardy's Wessex was Frederick Whitehead.Working en plein air - directly from nature - - with landscapes viewed through a Hardyean lens- he embraced the Hardy Brand - which was advantageous when exhibiting and selling work in London's Royal Academy and other galleries.Critics noted that Whitehead's work attracted considerable attention outside art circles because of Mr. Hardy's connection with the county. To further emphasise the point, Whitehead accompanied his work with relevant Hardy quotations, often from Tess or the Return of the Native.Whitehead knew Hardy and was aware of his writings of the Wessex countryside, he wrote of reading his novels in the evening, relishing the descriptive passages of every hamlet of cob and thatch, and then painitng his landscape settings by day. Whitehead often adopted overt Hardy references in his titles and acommpanying text to make the work more commercial.This nexus between pictures, place and words was sanctioned by Hardy, who so admired Whitehead's large painting of Blackmore Vale (from Bulbarrow) - that he commissioned a smaller version (the lot offered here).Hardy's wife Emma painted landscapes explicitly acknowledging Whitehead's influence, closely copying his work, as in her painting of Bulbarrow (now in the collection of Dorset County Museum), which she inscribed as 'after Whitehead'.Gwen Yarker
