Sydney from North Shore, 1875, panorama photograph of Sydney by Charles Bayliss (1850-1897) and Bernard Otto Holtermann (1838-1885), consisting of five albumen prints conjoined and mounted on linen-backed paper mount, image heavily faded, creased, chipped and split with complete loss of approximately 6 cm strip between first and second albumen print to the left of the panorama, Holter[mann] printed in the image lower centre, locations and points of interest in contemporary purple ink to upper and lower mount, mount soiled and browned, together with a black & white collotype six-part panorama of Sydney Harbour by Exchange Studios, circa 1920, from an original photograph taken from North Sydney, printed credit in the negative and captioned to lower margin, some soiling and a few small stains, long split to centre fold, linen-backed, 170 x 22 cm Bayliss, originally from Suffolk, produced this wet-plate panorama in 1875 from the 27-metre-high tower of Holtermann's home in Lavender Bay. Using a large-format camera with a 100-inch telefoto lens the view was captured on two single negatives, each measuring 90 x 150 cm and were the largest photographs taken by the collodion process. The example owned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales measures 22 x 141 cm. Sold with all faults not subject to return. (2)
