RARE Early Reid IIIa Camera #P1012. With production numbering starting at P1000 (or possibly P1001) only 3 earlier serial numbers have so far been recorded (see our unique list at tinyurl.com/yalfkkv6). Top plate shows the original wording 'Reid & Sigrist Ltd. LEICESTER' without the later 'Eng.' suffix. Minor bright marks to top and bottom plates. (shutter blinds very slow/sticking until advance knob is turned, hence condition 6H). Fitted with an early bright chrome barrel, chrome outer ring version Taylor Hobson 2 inch f2 Anastigmat lens #328696 with matching 3-figure number (696) to barrel. Reid IIIa Camera with RARE Early (unknown?) Taylor Hobson Type Lens. Camera #P3049 has a Minor bright marks to top and bottom plates. (shutter blinds sticking, often inoperative until advance knob is turned, hence condition 6H). Fitted with a very unusual, 2 inch f2 collapsible SM lens. Lens shows no makers name on the (unusual) black rim, just the serial number 306329 & description. There is no indication that other markings have been removed. When collapsed the letters "N K" show on the barrel which would indicate at least this part of the lens was originally made by Nikon, but it differs in appearance to other Nikon RF lenses. It tapers to the front, with no 'tab' on the aperture rim. It is marked with an unusual infinity symbol down to 3.5 feet, but the ring does move past this figure a little. Apertures run from f2 down to f16, with the '6' of 16 being very slightly different to most Nikon markings. The apertures run counter-clockwise, the opposite way to other Nikon RF lenses with the indicator arrow in black. When fitted to a Reid, Leica, Leotax, or Nicca the infinity lock ends up at around the 11 o'clock position instead of around the expected 7 o'clock position. No other examples of this type of lens can be found. (JVC).
A Genuine 'Fake' Leica IIIb, Made (Unofficially) in The Reid & Sigrist Factory. In the course of his extensive Reid research, in the mid to late 1980s John Vincent recorded interviews with several ex-R&S employees, resulting in hundreds of pages of transcriptions and notes. Several ex-employees supplied John with 'left-over' parts, 'liberated' work-in-progress items and even prototypes. Some just told him tales of what went on behind-the-scenes during their time in the factory. A story started to emerge that at least one employee (un-named) was actually making 'Leicas' in his lunch breaks.Obviously the Reid & Sigrist factory had practically all the parts need to assemble a 'Leica' readily to hand, along with high-quality engraving facilities (see lot 366F etc). It seems this person made 'several' examples (exact number unknown) and had a lucrative side-line supplying them to a well-known camera shop. These cameras are difficult to identify with just a few tell-tale signs they are not genuine Leicas, such as the design of the shutter release, an obviously English baseplate engraving, the design of the slow speed dial etc. It is not known if the serial numbers used to create these cameras relate to those of genuine Leicas. This example is marked with serial number 350713. (shutter blinds slightly ceased, fires OK on fast speeds, slow/sticky blinds on slow speeds, hence condition 5H). Fitted with a Leitz 5cm f3.5 Elmar lens #826047 (slight cleaning marks, condition 5F) with cap and comes in an un-named ERC. Also included is John's genuine Leica IIIb #280716 (condition 4/5F). Fitted with a Leitz 5cm f3.5 Elmar lens #1426916 (slight cleaning marks, condition 5F) with cap and comes in Leitz ERC. (JVC).
A Unique, Prototype Reid Camera, Serial Number X4. The star lot of the John Vincent Collection! At first glance this appears to be a Reid IIIa but there are no strap lugs on the body and there is a little more empty space on the top plate. This is due to the fact the body moulding is slightly longer than any other Reid. The reason for this becomes obvious when the base is removed and the extreme edges inspected as this camera has been redesigned to incorporate an opening back for ease of film loading. JV's notes indicate that the factory were aware of the film loading short-comings of Leica and similar cameras and were convinced this feature once introduced would boost their sales. Sadly so much time and effort was spent on making the newly designed moulding light-tight that the project was shelved. Assuming this camera dates towards the end of the company's life, the more practical SLR was gaining popularity and Reid's production costs were already starting to spiral. John's research notes show that in the late 1980s a rangefinder cover (only) with the number X3 was known to be in the possession of a former employee, but several of his sources independently state that only one finished camera was ever produced, making this an important item in British photographic history. In full working order it comes with an uncommon (early?) bright chrome barrel version Taylor Hobson 2 inch f2 Anastigmat lens #328262, lacking the 3-figure number to barrel. (very slight internal marks condition 4/5F) with lens cap. Also included is a Reid ERC, the inside edges of which have had the padding removed so the longer body comfortably fits. PLEASE NOTE, due to its one-off design, standard Reid top and bottom plate are not interchangeable with those from standard models. For a short video on the opening back in action, please visit https://tinyurl.com/wkqmo4m (JVC).
A large model of a camera, based on a Leica II. Hand-made from (solid?) wood and well detailed (a couple of parts actually move) and with a leatherette type covering to the body. The front of the lens has a condenser lens loosely fitted which may be a later addition, but enhances the overall effect. Unable to find any information about the name Jon Catton 1986 (presumably the maker, and the date he made it) impressed into the top.No history or provenance is available from the family of the collector of this items, except that they thought it came from Germany. Assuming the camera is based on a Leica II from around 1926 then a model made in 1986 may indicate it was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of that model.Overall condition is good with just a few minor bumps and dings, one round rangefinder eyepiece cover missing from the front, plus a chip from the front of the lens at around the 12 o'clock position. A VERY heavy and unique item.
