A RARE EARLY 18th CENTURY ENGLISH CULPEPER TYPE MICROSCOPE having circular lignum vitae base with lens and three gilded brass supports to the ray shagreen body. Single stage. Overall 7.25" high plus additional optic. (May not be complete). CONDITION REPORT: May not be complete, chips and losses to edge mouldings generally and wear commensurate with age. Appears to be slightly out of line. Cap does not screw onto top. Shagreen does not appear to have any major damage although wear as expected.

This reproduction of a Culpeper-Style brass compound microscope Is fastened to a wooden box base. The three scrolled legs support the body and circular stage. There Is coarse focus only, by moving the inner tube up and down in the body tube. There are two unmarked objectives that screw into the end of a long nosepiece, mounted on the bottom end of the inner tube. The two lens Huygenian-type eyepiece screws into the top end of the inner tube. The eye cup has a sliding dust cover. There are no springs to maintain tension between the inner and outer tubes, Illumination is by a concave mirror, attached to the centre of the wood base. There is also a bull's eye lens that mounts on a hole in the stage. The only remaining devices for holding specimens are two substage spring clips. There is a fish plate and a probe that mount in holes on the stage. It is signed Burke & Jones, Bristol. No.177 on the body tube. It comes with a pyramidal mahogany carrying case. All Aspects of Condition Is Excellent.
A heavy and very powerful Copper and Brass cased Telescope having 1/2'' diameter eyepiece and a 2'' diameter object lens, with brass hood/reducer with a 1/4'' diameter central aperture and most unusually having a zoom facility operated by the rotation of a milled collar close to the eyepiece, as well as a focusing ring, the optics incorporating a sighting cross wire, 29 1/2'' long on maximum magnification, weight 4.47 kg. approx.
