Animal Locomotion: An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements, 1872-1885, Author's Edition, Philadelphia, 1887, title leaf and twenty-one collotype plates printed by the Photogravure Company, each image approx. 32 x 22 cm without letterpress, spotting and some marginal finger-soiling throughout, orig. cloth with leather title label to upper cover, scuffed and marked, some fraying at extremities, 48 x 60 cm. Between 1884 and 1886 Muybridge and his team produced 20,000 negatives of various animals and humans in motion, which were then arranged on 781 plates and printed in 1887 as Animal Locomotion. This scarce copy of the Author's Edition contains selected plates 565, 616, 626, 647, 659, 710, 721, 739, 755, 3, 152, 174, 187, 214, 465, 471, 279, 289, 347, 133, 408. One other copy of this same edition traced at the University of California Berkeley contains the same first sixteen plates plus plates 57, 49, 209, 748, 469. Truthful Lens 105 - first issue of 1871: 'Many photographers recorded the devastation of Paris and surroundings following the Franco-Prussian War and the uprising of the Commune. This, however, is the only collection published with descriptive text and letterpress captions... Among the subjects are views of the gutted City Hall, of the Tuileries, Saint Cloud, the overturned Colonne Vendome, etc.'. (2)
