COMPANY BOOKS -- [HIPMAN, Vladimir, attributed to.] Skoda. Prague: Unie [c.1939]. 2° (290 x 250mm). 38 gravures on cardstock each with printed tissue guards. (A very few corners a little bumped.) Original photo-illustrated card covers tied with a purple silk ribbon (some wear, expert repairs). RARE: one of probably about 50 copies in English, from an edition of about 200 copies: 50 each in English, German, French and Czech. Almost certainly photographed by Vladimir Hipman, who at the time was the leading photographer of industrial subjects working for Unie. Here he turns his lens on Skoda's Locomotive Workshop, and his photographs are printed in rich gravure on cardstock. Skoda began as an arms manufacturer in 1859 before branching out into trains. Bookseller Vaclav Klement founded the bicycle manufacture, and later motorcycle- and car-maker, which was eventually acquired by Skoda. View on Christie's.com
A VICTORIAN SILVER-MOUNTED MOROCCO LEATHER BLOTTING BOOK with spirally lobed and fluted mounts, 30 x 22cm, by William Comyns & Sons, London 1896, a giltmetal and EPNS magnifying glass with carved ivory handle and a silver-mounted cut glass inkwell (3) ++Blotting book - the front faded, one of the mounts partly detached and requires refixing, without loss. A single stone diamond ring, the brilliant cut diamond is in an eight claw setting with a bark effect ring shank. Estimated diamond weight 1.90cts, colour H-I, clarity P1. Stamped 18ct. Weight 5.1gms. Condition: Overall condition good-the diamond has a small scattering of black inclusions through the stone just visible without the 10x lens. The bark effect hoop has incurred some wear in keeping with being worn over a period of time.
An 18ct gold five stone diamond ring, the graduated brilliant cut diamonds are claw set. Estimated total diamond weight 0.50ct, colour H-J, clarity SI2-P1. Condition: Overall condition good, the diamonds are bright and well matched. One stone has a black inclusion just visible without a 10x lens. The hoop has incurred little wear and the hallmark is clear.
A 19th century Naval pocket telescope by Bate, London, c.1830, achromatic telescope with mahogany case and brass three drawer section, signed "Bate, London" to eyepiece, also together with brass sliding cover and lens cap in a leather case, 55.5 cm extended. *Robert Bate (1782-1847) produced a number of telescopes of this type, several examples are held in the National Maritime Museum collection.
