Adolf Luther (1912 Krefeld-Uerdingen - 1989 Krefeld) (F)'Stelen' (lens sculpture), plexi glass, with plexi glass stand, dimensions (without stand) 40 cm x 25 cm x 4 cm, signed, dated 84, slightly chipped, some surface scratches, one short scratch to the lensAdolf Luther was born 25th April 1912 in Uerdingen and is considered one of the main representatives of Kinetic Art and Op Art. His work is often characterized by the use of lenses and mirrors through which light breaks from different angles to create fascinating optical effects. In 1938, Luther began studying law in Cologne, but this was interrupted by his conscription into military service and his subsequent capture by American troops. Upon his return to Germany, he continued his legal studies and received his doctorate in law from the University of Bonn in 1942. In addition to his work as a judge, he developed an interest in painting and increasingly explored the phenomenon of light in his works. The change from colour field painting to sculpture in 1957 marked a turning point in his career, from then on he devoted himself exclusively to his art and created the first optical, kinetic sculptures, which were to be the focus of his work in the following period. He created his first light objects in 1962 and from then on used light as a principal design feature. In the same year he exhibited for the first time together with the artist group ''ZERO''. He first began creating sculptures made from concave and convex mirrors in 1968.
